Student answer (Band 6.0)

Globalisation has facilitated trade and interconnectedness among many nations. With the advent of internet, easy in air travel and multi cultural trade this removed physical boarders among countries and continents and facilitated safe movement of good and services. This essay will discuss the pros and cons of this interaction and argue that its benefits outweigh the disadvantages.

There are many benefits associated with globalisation. Firstly, it facilitates the exchange of skills and innovation across the globe. For example, most first world countries like the United Kingdom, France and Spain have been facing a decline in the work force due to declining births while Africa has plenty of youths who are capable of working. This was exacerbated by Covid-19. That exchange of labour eased the effects in these nations. More importantly, it also facilitates growth of poor or under developed nations. Countries like China has been making huge investments and its foot prints in many less privileged countries in Africa.

There are however some problems associated with this. This is often linked to culture dilution. It takes a lot effort from both nations to learn history, culture and ways of integration within communities. Many nations have recorded poor acceptance from the host nation and resulting in crime rates soaring. In addition the free movement of people in most cases creates a one way flow where people end up flocking to rich countries whilst the opposite doesn't hold. In the end there will be overpopulation in rich countries and underpopulation in poor countries.

In conclusion, its pros far outweigh its cons as there is anticipated economic growth among nations, facilitated innovation and trade. However, it is also associated with culture erosion, population challenges and rising crime rates.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that the benefits of globalisation outweigh the drawbacks. The ideas are relevant, such as the exchange of labour and economic growth, though some points are slightly under-developed. For instance, the argument regarding 'culture dilution' and 'crime rates' is mentioned but lacks specific examples or deeper analysis to fully support the claim. The essay maintains a consistent position throughout, and the conclusion effectively summarises the main points. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting point is fully explored with more detailed evidence or logical reasoning.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organised into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. The progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Firstly', 'More importantly', 'However', and 'In conclusion', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing and sentence-level cohesion, such as the abrupt transition between the discussion of labour and the mention of China. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the overall structure is sound, providing a clear framework for the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at less common items like 'exacerbated', 'interconnectedness', and 'facilitated'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'easy in air travel' (should be 'ease of air travel'), 'physical boarders' (should be 'borders'), and 'foot prints in many less privileged countries'. These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of the argument. Expanding the range of academic collocations would help elevate the score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'Countries like China has been making' (subject-verb agreement error), 'the advent of internet' (missing article), and 'resulting in crime rates soaring' (awkward phrasing). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are instances where commas are missing or misused. The control of grammar is sufficient to convey the message, but the frequency of errors prevents a higher score.
