Student answer (Band 7.0)

Globalisation has made the world more connected through the internet, international travel, trade and popular culture. While some people believe that this increased interaction between countries brings many benefits, others argue that it can have negative effects. In my opinion, globalisation is largely a positive development because it creates economic opportunities, improves access to knowledge and promotes cultural understanding.

One major advantage of globalisation is that it provides greater economic opportunities. International trade allows countries to sell their products in foreign markets and purchase goods that may not be available domestically. As a result, businesses can expand and create more employment. For example, many developing countries have attracted international companies, which have provided jobs and contributed to economic growth. In addition, people can now work with companies and clients in other countries through the internet.

Another important benefit is the easier exchange of knowledge and information. The internet has made it possible for students, researchers and professionals to communicate with people around the world and access educational resources from different countries. For instance, a university student in Pakistan can attend an online course offered by a foreign university without travelling abroad. This interaction can improve education and help countries benefit from each other's experience and technology.

Globalisation also encourages cultural understanding. International travel, films, music and food allow people to learn about different lifestyles and traditions. This can reduce misunderstandings between nations and encourage greater tolerance. However, globalisation may also threaten local cultures, as international brands and popular culture can sometimes replace traditional customs and local products. Therefore, countries should make efforts to preserve their cultural heritage while participating in the global economy.

In conclusion, although globalisation can create some challenges, I believe its advantages outweigh its disadvantages. Greater international interaction can improve economies, increase access to knowledge and bring people from different cultures closer together. The key is to benefit from globalisation while protecting local cultures and values.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You have clearly stated your position in the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. Each body paragraph focuses on a distinct benefit—economic opportunities, knowledge exchange, and cultural understanding—which are well-supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of online courses and international trade. The counter-argument regarding the threat to local cultures is acknowledged and balanced, demonstrating a sophisticated approach to the topic. The ideas are extended and developed logically, meeting the requirements for a high band score.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, and the flow between paragraphs is smooth, aided by effective cohesive devices such as 'One major advantage', 'In addition', 'Another important benefit', and 'In conclusion'. Referencing is clear throughout, and the paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. The structure is coherent, and the use of linking words is natural rather than mechanical, which contributes to the overall readability of the response.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'economic growth', 'educational resources', 'cultural heritage', and 'participating in the global economy' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is appropriate and conveys your meaning clearly, it lacks the occasional 'less common' or idiomatic collocations that would push the score into the 8.0+ range. However, there are no significant errors in word choice, and the language used is consistently natural and well-suited to an academic context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay displays a good variety of complex structures, such as conditional-like constructions ('if...'), relative clauses, and well-managed subordinate clauses. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and tense usage is strong. There are no grammatical errors that impede communication. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate a slightly wider variety of advanced grammatical structures, such as inversion or more complex passive constructions, but the current level of accuracy and range is very solid.
