Student answer (Band 6.0)

Over the past few decades, globalisation has surged due to the internet, air travel, trade, and popular culture. Many consider that increase in interaction between nations because of globalisation is a good thing. I believe, even though globalisation brings significant economic growth and cultural exchange, it also has some drawbacks.

The concept of globalisation is sound when it boosts economy of a country and brings harmony. For example, if a multinational company decides to plant a new manufacturing unit in another country, it creates new job opportunities and helps local workers earn some good amount money. Similarly, cultural exchange between countries through arts, music, and ideas over the internet has indirectly united many people across the world, for example South Korean group like BTS collaborating with western bands.

On the other hand, when a global company opens a new manufacturing unit in a country which has cheap labour. The company exploits the labour laws. For example, a big manufacturing industry can recruit a mass of cheap labour and can exploit them by making them work for longer hours and paying low wages. Similarly, this thing increases the inequality and the gap between rich and poor keeps on increasing. Moreover, production hours of these companies are not confined till harming Humana but also a great amount pollution to natural resources are disrupted. For example, construction of a manufacturing plant can disturb the natural habit and after construction it starts polluting the environment.

To conclude, globalisation can unite many people across countries over the internet and introduces new opportunities for other countries by creating jobs, but at the same time taking advantage of cheap labour laws and disturbing the environment shall not be overlooked.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, presenting a clear position that globalisation has both benefits and drawbacks. The ideas are relevant, such as economic growth and cultural exchange versus labour exploitation and environmental damage. However, the development of these points is somewhat uneven. For instance, the discussion on environmental impact is slightly underdeveloped and suffers from unclear phrasing, such as 'production hours... are not confined till harming Humana'. While the position is consistent, the supporting arguments could be more nuanced to reach a higher band. Overall, the response is well-focused on the topic and provides a balanced view as requested.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organised into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. The introduction sets the stage, the body paragraphs contrast the positive and negative aspects, and the conclusion summarises the main points. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Similarly', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as 'this thing increases the inequality'. The flow between sentences is generally smooth, but the internal structure of some sentences could be improved to enhance the overall coherence of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing the writer to express ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific terminology like 'multinational company', 'labour laws', and 'cultural exchange'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'plant a new manufacturing unit' (instead of 'establish' or 'set up') and 'harming Humana' (which is unclear and likely a typo). The range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, but the lack of more sophisticated or precise vocabulary limits the score. Improving collocation and avoiding informal phrasing would help elevate the lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the economy of a country'), subject-verb agreement, and awkward phrasing ('production hours... are not confined till harming Humana'). Punctuation is generally functional, but some sentences are clunky or grammatically incomplete. Despite these errors, the meaning is usually clear, and the mistakes do not significantly impede communication. To improve, the writer should focus on sentence construction, specifically ensuring that complex clauses are correctly linked and that articles are used consistently.
