Student answer (Band 7.5)

The rapid development of the internet has been a major driver of globalisation, increasing interaction between nations through trade, travel and popular culture. I agree that this is largely a positive development because greater international integration can generate economic benefits and encourage cultural exchange.

One major advantage of globalisation is that it can generate significant economic benefits for countries. International trade has become much easier as businesses can use the internet to reach customers in overseas markets. In particular, small businesses are no longer restricted to consumers in their local areas and can advertise and sell their products internationally, which can increase their customer base and revenue. For example, a small Japanese food producer can sell its products to customers in the United States through an online store, allowing it to access a market that would previously have been difficult to reach. Therefore, by giving businesses access to international markets, globalisation can create greater commercial opportunities and contribute to economic growth.

Another major benefit of globalisation is that greater exposure to foreign cultures can encourage people to travel and interact with other nationalities. Through social media, online entertainment and international popular culture, people can easily discover foreign food, music, traditions and lifestyles. This exposure can create curiosity about other cultures and motivate people to visit countries that they have previously encountered only online. For instance, the global popularity of Korean music has attracted international audiences, with fans from different countries attending concerts and becoming more interested in Korean culture. Such interactions can reduce cultural barriers and allow people to develop a better understanding and appreciation of different ways of life.

In conclusion, I believe that globalisation has had a significant positive impact by creating economic opportunities and promoting cultural exchange between nations. Greater access to international markets can benefit businesses and economies, while increased exposure to foreign cultures can bring people from different backgrounds closer together.
