Student answer (Band 6.5)
Over the past few decades, globalisation has surged due to the internet, air travel, trade, and popular culture. Many consider that the increase in interaction between nations because of globalisation represents a good thing. I believe, even though globalisation brings significant economic growth and cultural exchange, it also has some drawbacks.
The concept of globalisation is sound when it boosts a country's economy and brings harmony. For example, if a multinational enterprise decides to plant a new manufacturing unit in another nation, it creates new job opportunities and helps local workers earn a decent income. Similarly, cultural exchange between territories through arts, music, and ideas over the internet has indirectly united many people across the world. For instance, the South Korean group BTS has collaborated with western bands, demonstrating how globalisation facilitates cultural connection.
However, globalisation can also facilitate exploitation. When global corporations open manufacturing units in countries with cheap labour, they often exploit workers by making them work for longer hours and paying low wages. This inequality widens the gap between rich and poor. Moreover, production activities of these firms are not confined to harming human beings but also cause substantial pollution to natural resources. For example, construction of a manufacturing plant can disturb the natural habitat, and after construction it starts polluting the environment.
To conclude, globalisation can unite many people across nations over the internet and introduce new opportunities by creating jobs. However, the exploitation of cheap labour laws and environmental degradation shall not be overlooked.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The essay addresses the prompt by discussing both the benefits and drawbacks of globalisation, maintaining a clear position throughout. However, the response falls just short of the 250-word minimum requirement, which negatively impacts the score. While the ideas are relevant and supported by examples like the BTS collaboration and manufacturing exploitation, the development is somewhat concise. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your arguments with more depth or additional supporting evidence to ensure the word count is comfortably met and the analysis is more comprehensive.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use cohesive devices such as 'Similarly', 'However', and 'Moreover' effectively to link sentences and ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the structure is coherent throughout. To improve, ensure that the transition between the benefits and the drawbacks is slightly more nuanced to enhance the flow of your argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'multinational enterprise', 'cultural exchange', and 'environmental degradation' are used correctly and appropriately for an academic context. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. To move into the higher bands, try to incorporate more sophisticated collocations or less common idiomatic expressions to show greater flexibility and control over your lexical choices.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. You use conditional sentences ('if a multinational enterprise decides...') and relative clauses effectively. The grammar is generally accurate, with only minor slips, such as 'production activities... are not confined to harming human beings but also cause...', which is slightly awkward. Overall, the majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and syntax is strong enough to ensure clear communication throughout the response.
