Student answer (Band 6.5)
Globalisation has become increasingly significant in recent years due to the rapid development of the internet, international travel, trade and popular culture. While some people argue that greater interaction between countries is beneficial, others believe that it can have negative consequences. In my opinion, globalisation is largely a positive development because it creates economic opportunities and promotes cultural understanding.
One major advantage of globalisation is that it encourages international trade and economic growth. Companies can now sell their products and services to customers in different parts of the world, while developing countries can attract foreign investment and create employment opportunities. For example, many businesses in countries such as India have benefited from international companies outsourcing information technology and customer-service operations. As a result, globalisation can raise living standards and provide people with better career opportunities.
Another important benefit is the increased exchange of knowledge and ideas. The internet allows people from different countries to communicate almost instantly and learn from one another. This is particularly valuable in areas such as education, science and medicine, where international cooperation can lead to significant advances. In addition, exposure to foreign cultures through films, music, food and travel can help people understand different lifestyles and reduce cultural prejudice.
However, globalisation also has some disadvantages. The spread of international businesses and popular culture can sometimes threaten local traditions and small businesses. In addition, increased international competition may cause some workers to lose their jobs when companies move their operations to countries where labour costs are lower. Nevertheless, these problems can be reduced through appropriate government policies, such as supporting local industries and providing workers with opportunities to develop new skills.
In conclusion, although globalisation can create challenges,

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position from the introduction through to the body paragraphs. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the economic and cultural benefits of globalisation. The counter-argument is also acknowledged and balanced with potential solutions. However, the essay ends abruptly with an incomplete conclusion ('In conclusion, although globalisation can create challenges,'), which prevents the final summary from being fully developed. This is a significant omission that impacts the overall task completion, as the reader is left without a final synthesis of the argument.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The essay is logically organised with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between the benefits and the drawbacks is smooth. Cohesive devices such as 'One major advantage', 'In addition', and 'Nevertheless' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. The only issue is the incomplete final paragraph, which disrupts the logical flow at the very end of the response. Otherwise, the structure is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the task. The student uses a range of topic-specific terms such as 'foreign investment', 'outsourcing', 'cultural prejudice', and 'labour costs'. The control of word choice is generally good, and the language is natural. While there are no major errors in collocation, the range is somewhat standard. To reach a higher band, the student could incorporate more sophisticated or idiomatic expressions to demonstrate a wider, more flexible lexical range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The essay demonstrates a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. The grammar is generally accurate, with very few errors. For instance, the use of conditional-like structures ('when companies move their operations') and complex noun phrases is handled well. Punctuation is used correctly throughout the text. The majority of sentences are error-free, showing a high level of control. The grammatical range is sufficient to convey complex ideas clearly and accurately.
