Student answer (Band 7.5)

Globalisation has become an increasingly important feature of modern society, as advances in technology, transportation and communication have made it easier for countries to interact. Although some people argue that this development has negative consequences, I believe that increased international interaction is largely beneficial because it promotes economic growth, cultural understanding and the exchange of knowledge.

One major advantage of globalisation is that it creates economic opportunities for both developed and developing countries. International trade allows nations to specialise in producing goods and services in which they have a competitive advantage. As a result, consumers can access a wider range of products at more affordable prices. Furthermore, foreign investment can create employment and improve infrastructure in developing countries. For example, many Asian countries have experienced significant economic growth by participating in international trade and attracting multinational companies.

Another important benefit is the exchange of ideas and knowledge. Through the internet, students can access educational resources from universities around the world, while researchers can collaborate across national borders. This can accelerate scientific discoveries and help countries address common challenges, such as climate change and public health. In addition, international travel and popular culture can encourage people to learn about different traditions, reducing prejudice and promoting mutual understanding.

However, globalisation can also create certain problems. Increased international competition may harm local businesses that cannot compete with larger foreign companies. Moreover, the widespread influence of global media can sometimes lead to the decline of traditional cultures and languages. Nevertheless, these challenges can be addressed through appropriate government policies, such as supporting local industries and preserving cultural heritage.

In conclusion, while globalisation may create economic and cultural challenges, I believe that its benefits far outweigh its disadvantages. By encouraging trade, knowledge-sharing and international understanding, it has the potential to improve living standards and contribute to a more connected and cooperative world.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the task. You have clearly stated your position in the introduction and maintained it throughout the essay. Each body paragraph provides relevant, well-developed ideas, such as economic growth through specialization and the collaborative nature of scientific research. You also acknowledge the counter-argument regarding local businesses and cultural decline, which demonstrates a balanced approach. The ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of Asian economic growth and the role of the internet in education. The conclusion effectively summarizes your position, ensuring the response is cohesive and task-focused.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the transition between paragraphs is smooth. You use a variety of cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Furthermore', 'In addition', 'However', and 'Nevertheless', which help guide the reader through your argument. The referencing is clear, and the paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points. The flow of information is natural, and the relationship between the ideas is always easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a high band score in this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases such as 'competitive advantage', 'foreign investment', 'accelerate scientific discoveries', and 'preserving cultural heritage' show an awareness of style and collocation. The vocabulary is natural and appropriate for an academic context. While the range is good, it could be slightly more sophisticated to reach the highest band, but it is certainly flexible and precise enough to convey your meaning clearly without any errors in word choice or spelling that would impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay displays a good variety of complex structures, such as conditional-like constructions ('if... can') and subordinate clauses ('Although some people argue...', 'while researchers can collaborate...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation and grammar is strong. There are no significant errors that hinder the reader's understanding. You consistently use accurate verb tenses and appropriate sentence structures, which demonstrates a high level of grammatical competence. The writing is fluent and demonstrates a solid command of English syntax.
