Student answer (Band 7.0)

In recent years Globalisation has led to greater interaction of countries through internet, international trade and popular culture. Some people believe that increased interaction brings positive impact while others may be concerned about its negative impact. In my opinion, increased interaction between nations is largely a positive development because it creates economic opportunities and promotes cultural understanding.

One major benefit of globalisation is that it provides countries with greater economic opportunities. International trade provides businesses with greater opportunities to sell their product in international market and give access to consumers to wide range goods and services. In addition to this companies can cooperate with international businesses and can create employment and investment in foreign countries.

Another important benefit oof globalisation is that it enables people to communicate with people of different cultures easily. The internet and social media enable people to exchange ideas, learn foreign languages and understand different lifestyles without having to travel abroad. International tourism and student exchange programmes can also encourage people to develop a more open-minded attitude towards other cultures. As a result, greater communication between nations can reduce cultural misunderstandings and strengthen international relationships.

However, globalisation can also have some disadvantages. The spread of international popular culture may gradually weaken local traditions and languages, particularly among younger generations. Furthermore, increased international trade can benefit wealthier countries and large corporations more than poorer communities. There is also a risk that countries become overly dependent on global markets, meaning that an economic crisis in one part of the world can affect many other countries.

Despite these concerns, I believe that the advantages of globalisation outweigh its disadvantages. The increased movement of people, ideas and goods has made countries more connected and has provided many opportunities for economic and social development. The negative effects can also be reduced through appropriate government policies that protect local cultures and ensure that the benefits of international trade are distributed fairly.

In conclusion, globalisation has increased interaction between nations in many areas, including trade, communication and culture. Although this process can create certain problems, I believe that it is generally beneficial because it promotes economic development and helps people understand one another better.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have addressed all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position from the introduction through to the conclusion. Your ideas are well-developed, particularly in the body paragraphs where you discuss economic opportunities and cultural exchange. You also effectively acknowledge the counter-arguments regarding the loss of local traditions and economic dependency, which adds depth to your response. The position is consistent throughout, and the main points are supported with relevant explanations. To reach a higher band, ensure that your examples are slightly more specific; for instance, instead of general references to 'international trade', you could briefly mention a specific industry or a type of cultural exchange to further strengthen your arguments.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you use a variety of cohesive devices such as 'In addition to this', 'Another important benefit', and 'However' to transition between points effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the argument. While the flow is generally smooth, some of the linking phrases are quite standard. To improve, you could experiment with more sophisticated referencing or varied cohesive structures to make the connections between sentences feel even more natural and less mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases like 'economic opportunities', 'cultural understanding', and 'overly dependent' are used correctly and appropriately for the context. There are a few minor slips, such as the typo 'oof' in the second body paragraph. While your vocabulary is functional and accurate, it leans towards a more common register. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more 'less common' lexical items or idiomatic collocations that reflect a more academic tone, such as 'homogenisation of culture' or 'economic interdependence'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You show good control over a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. Most of your sentences are error-free, and your punctuation is generally accurate. You successfully use complex sentences to express cause and effect, such as in your concluding paragraph. There are occasional minor errors, such as missing articles (e.g., 'in international market' should be 'in the international market') and minor punctuation spacing issues. However, these errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, ensure consistent use of articles and continue to vary your sentence structures to demonstrate greater grammatical flexibility.
