Student answer (Band 5.5)

In a contemporary world, it is widely argued that globalization has been increasing with the help of air travel, business and famous culture. Consequently, a large proportion of society believes that it interaction between nations is a positive development. While globalization brings opportunity and peace, it also increases the living costs for natives. I support the former view; however, both perspective will be discussed in the following paragraphs.

Supporters of the first school of thoughts claim that migrants have increased due to globalization. Overseas people have started renting out properties and due to that housing price surged. As a result, locals are also inflicted to pay exorbitant amount of house rent. For instance, a landlord can ask lucrative amount from an outsider visiting the city for the first time, and that rate then perpetuates for eternal.

While critics of the aforementioned view, including me, argue that interaction from people coming from outside provides an opportunity to learn their culture and acquire acumen of various realms they know. Different countries have their own infrastructure, exchange of knowledge would always result positively. For example, an entrepreneur holding a workshop while on a business visit in a foreign country can share his ideas of startup which stem the youth to think something new. On top of that, trade and cultural exchange can bring peace between two rival countries. When people of both countries are adhered together, the government eventually surrenders. To illustrate that, Nepal and India both celebrate festival of Diwali because of migrants living in Nepal introduced this festival there, and consequently their government allow them to exchange sweets and love between both nations.

To sum it up, although globalization brings colossal amount of rents, knowledge exchange and peace are far more significant.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both sides of the globalization debate and providing a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. The argument regarding housing costs is a bit simplistic, and the example regarding Nepal and India is factually confusing and lacks clarity in its connection to the broader topic of globalization. While the position is clear throughout, the supporting arguments would benefit from more logical depth and more precise examples to reach a higher band. The conclusion is also quite brief and does not fully synthesize the points made in the body paragraphs.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Consequently', 'For instance', and 'To sum it up', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the phrase 'that rate then perpetuates for eternal', which is grammatically awkward and disrupts the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different viewpoints, but the internal cohesion within the second paragraph could be improved to ensure smoother transitions between the ideas of cultural exchange and political peace.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at more sophisticated language like 'exorbitant', 'acumen', and 'colossal'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'famous culture' (instead of 'popular culture'), 'inflicted to pay' (instead of 'forced to pay'), and 'stem the youth' (instead of 'encourage the youth'). These errors occasionally impede the precision of the argument. To improve, focus on learning collocations and ensuring that words are used in their correct context rather than just using complex-sounding vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'it interaction between nations' (extra 'it'), 'both perspective will be discussed' (subject-verb agreement), and 'perpetuates for eternal' (incorrect word form). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure often feels slightly unnatural. The majority of sentences contain minor errors, though these rarely prevent the reader from understanding the intended meaning. Increasing the accuracy of basic grammatical structures will help improve the overall clarity and flow of the writing.
