Student answer (Band 7.0)

Globalisation has increased rapidly in recent decades due to developments in the internet, air travel, international trade and popular culture. While some people consider the growing interaction between countries to be beneficial, others may argue that it can have negative consequences. In my opinion, globalisation is largely a positive development because it creates economic opportunities and promotes cultural understanding.

On the one hand, increased global interaction can provide several important benefits. Firstly, international trade allows countries to exchange goods, services and technologies more easily. This can create employment opportunities and improve living standards, particularly in developing countries. Secondly, globalisation enables people to communicate with individuals from different cultures. As a result, people can learn about different traditions, lifestyles and ideas, which may reduce cultural misunderstandings. For example, students can communicate with international students through social media and online platforms without having to travel abroad.

On the other hand, globalisation can also create certain problems. One major concern is that local cultures may gradually become less distinctive as international brands, languages and forms of entertainment become more popular. For instance, young people in many countries increasingly follow Western fashion, music and lifestyles. Furthermore, increased international competition can negatively affect small local businesses because they may struggle to compete with large multinational companies.

In conclusion, although globalisation can threaten local cultures and create difficulties for some businesses, I believe its advantages outweigh its disadvantages. Greater international interaction can encourage economic development, cultural understanding and the exchange of knowledge, making globalisation a generally positive trend.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that globalisation is a positive development. The ideas are relevant and logically extended. For instance, the discussion on economic benefits and cultural exchange is well-supported with examples like international trade and social media. The counter-argument regarding the loss of local culture is also well-integrated. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarises the main points. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more specific, real-world examples rather than general statements, which would further strengthen the depth of the argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central topic sentence, such as 'On the one hand, increased global interaction can provide several important benefits.' Cohesive devices like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. The progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow. The paragraphing is appropriate, and referencing is clear throughout the text. The structure is coherent and demonstrates a good command of organisational features.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is sufficient and appropriate for the topic. The student uses relevant terms such as 'international trade', 'multinational companies', 'cultural understanding', and 'economic opportunities'. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary, and the word choice is generally precise. While the range is adequate, it does not consistently demonstrate the 'less common' or 'idiomatic' control required for higher bands. However, there are no significant errors in word choice or collocation that impede communication, and the tone remains formal and academic throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

The essay displays a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures. For example, the use of conditional and concessive clauses ('although globalisation can threaten...', 'which may reduce...') shows a good command of grammar. The majority of sentences are error-free, and punctuation is used correctly. While the grammatical range is solid, it lacks the consistent variety of sophisticated, error-free complex structures that would characterise a band 8 or 9. Nevertheless, the control is strong, and errors are virtually non-existent, making the writing very easy to read and understand.
