Student answer (Band 6.0)

Globalisation has transformed the way nations interact with one another, largely through the development of the internet, international travel, trade, and culture. Although some people argue that this increase in the interactions may have some negative consequences. I believe that globalisation is predominantly a positive development because it promotes economic growth, cultural understanding, and international cooperation.

One of the major benefits of having globalisation is it creates economic opportunities. International trade enables businesses to enter overseas markets, while developing countries can attract foreign investments and gain access to advanced technologies. This stimulates economic growth and employment. For instance, multinational companies often establish factories in the developing countries, which provide local workforce employment while contributing to the country's economy.

Nevertheless, critics argue that globalisation may threaten local cultures and traditions. The widespread influence of dominant cultures through films, music and social media can lead to cultural homogenisation. There is also concern that smaller businesses may struggle to compete with large multinational corporations. However, these disadvantages can be mitigated through government policies that protect local industries and cultural heritage.

In conclusion, although globalisation can pose certain economic and cultural challenges, I believe that its advantages considerably outweigh its disadvantages. Increased interaction between nations promotes economic development, broadens cultural understanding and makes international cooperation more effective.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the benefits and drawbacks of globalisation and clearly states a position. However, the essay is significantly under the 250-word minimum requirement, which limits the depth of the arguments. While the main points regarding economic growth and cultural homogenisation are relevant, they are not fully developed. To reach a higher band, you must expand on your examples and provide more detailed explanations for your claims. The current length prevents a thorough exploration of the topic, which is a key requirement for higher scores in this criterion.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organised with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each paragraph has a central theme, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices such as 'One of the major benefits', 'Nevertheless', and 'In conclusion' to link your points. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs could be smoother. The overall structure is sound, but the brevity of the response makes the cohesion feel somewhat mechanical rather than sophisticated. Increasing the length would allow for more complex linking between ideas.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'homogenisation', 'mitigated', and 'multinational corporations' appropriately. The language is generally precise and conveys your meaning clearly. However, there is some repetition of basic words like 'economic' and 'globalisation'. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms and collocations related to the topic. While the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your ideas effectively, it lacks the flexibility and range required for a higher band score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Although some people argue that... I believe that...'. Most sentences are grammatically accurate, and punctuation is generally correct. There is a minor error in the first paragraph where a sentence fragment occurs: 'Although some people argue that this increase in the interactions may have some negative consequences.' This should be connected to the following sentence. Overall, your control of grammar is good, and errors are infrequent and do not impede communication.
