In recent years, through the internet, air travel, trade and popular culture, globalisation has rapidly increased. Many people believe that the increased interaction between nations through globalisation is a good thing.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

There are conflicting views as to whether globalisation which is growing rapidly among nations as a result of the internet, air travel and so on is a good trend or not. Although some people believe that this phenomenon cannot be a positive thing, others including me, think it is beneficial.

First and foremost, the interaction between countries will lead to the transfer of knowledge and data. Each country is usually famous for one or two good aspects worldwide. For example, in some areas of China or India, the concepts of meditation are taught professionally. Thus, this easy interaction would pave the way for those who want to be educated by native experts. Moreover, communication between people all around the world through the internet or other sources will reduce biases. In other words, being a narrow-minded person or a racist is mainly because of the lack of awareness about things or people that are different or minorities. Through knowing them better people would become more open and flexible as they understand we are all humans and our differences make this universe far more beautiful.

Some argue that involving with other cultures will cause an Identity crisis especially among younger people as they cannot distinguish the importance of their traditions. They also believe that getting more familiar with other countries would increase the rate of migration to developed countries as people in developing countries want to live in better situations. However, I believe that merging into other cultures is not something that could be totally prevented and people should understand the value of their own traditions and be proud of them. Additionally, migration to progressed nations can be effective as migrants can bring back all things they have learned to their motherlands and improve their countries.

In conclusion, I believe the growing communication among nations is a good trend as people can learn from each other and also because this reduces biases.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views on globalisation and presenting a clear, well-supported personal opinion throughout. In the body paragraphs, you present logical arguments regarding the transfer of knowledge, reduction of bias, and the potential counter-arguments concerning cultural identity and migration. Your position is maintained consistently from the introduction through to the conclusion. The ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as meditation in China or India, and your reflection on how travel allows migrants to bring skills back to their motherlands. This performance firmly meets the requirements for a Band 7.0, as all parts of the prompt are covered with clear reasoning and development, though certain points could be pushed slightly deeper to reach a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

Your essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. You make effective use of cohesive devices to guide the reader through your arguments, such as "First and foremost," "Moreover," and "In conclusion." Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the introduction, distinct body arguments, counter-arguments, and conclusion into clear blocks of text. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional transitional phrases feel slightly standard or mechanical (for example, "Some argue that..."). Cohesion is well managed overall, ensuring that information and ideas flow smoothly from one sentence to the next without causing confusion. This aligns closely with the Band 7 descriptors for coherence and cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow flexibility and precision, successfully using less common lexical items such as "conflicting views," "phenomenon," "narrow-minded," and "identity crisis." There is a good awareness of style appropriate for an academic essay. However, there are a few minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as writing "involving with other cultures" instead of "engaging with other cultures," and "progressed nations" instead of "developed nations." Despite these occasional slips, your vocabulary is varied enough to communicate your ideas clearly and effectively, preventing any breakdown in meaning and earning a solid Band 6.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You successfully employ a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional or multi-clause sentences like "Although some people believe that this phenomenon cannot be a positive thing, others including me, think it is beneficial." There is generally good control of grammar and punctuation. However, there are some minor grammatical errors and awkward phrasings present, such as "involving with other cultures will cause an Identity crisis" (missing a hyphen in identity crisis and incorrect preposition) and "bring back all things they have learned." The majority of your sentences are clear, and punctuation is handled adequately. These persistent minor errors place your writing securely at the Band 6.5 level.
