Student answer (Band 7.5)

Driven by breakthroughs in digital communication, international travel, and cross-border trade, globalization has accelerated at an unprecedented pace. While a growing interconnectedness offers profound benefits for international cooperation and economic growth, it also introduces significant challenges regarding cultural homogenization and economic inequality. In my opinion, globalization is ultimately a positive force, provided its drawbacks are actively managed. On the one hand, increased global interaction yields undeniable advantages for economic development and cultural exchange. Economically, open trade networks allow developing countries to attract foreign direct investment and create millions of jobs. For instance, the expansion of tech manufacturing hubs in Southeast Asia has lifted massive populations out of poverty. Culturally, the internet and popular media dismantle geographic barriers, fostering greater empathy, tolerance, and shared knowledge across borders. Access to instant global communication ensures that scientific, medical, and educational breakthroughs can be shared universally, accelerating human progress as a collective whole. On the other hand, the rapid spread of globalization is not without its critics, who argue it poses risks to local industries and unique cultural identities. The dominance of multinational corporations often creates a homogenized global culture, where local languages, traditional customs, and regional cuisines are overshadowed by Western fast food, fashion, and media. Furthermore, critics point out that globalization can lead to economic exploitation, where wealthy nations exploit cheaper labor markets in developing states, widening the wealth gap rather than closing it.In conclusion, while the threat of cultural dilution and economic disparity must be taken seriously, the overall impact of global integration remains highly favorable. It drives vital economic mobility and cultivates a more unified global community. To maximize these benefits, governments must enforce fair trade practices and actively protect their unique cultural heritage.
