Student answer (Band 6.5)

Globalisation has increased rapidly in recent years because of the internet, air travel, international trade and popular culture. Many people believe that closer interaction between countries is beneficial. I largely agree with this view because globalisation creates opportunities for economic growth, education and cultural exchange.

Firstly, globalisation helps countries develop their economies. International trade allows businesses to sell their products in different markets and creates more employment opportunities. In addition, foreign companies can invest in developing countries and introduce new technologies. For example, many Indian companies have worked with international firms, which has helped them improve their services and provide jobs for local people. Therefore, globalisation can improve living standards in many countries.

Secondly, increased international interaction provides better educational opportunities. Students can study at universities abroad, learn new skills and experience different cultures. Moreover, people can communicate easily through the internet and share knowledge with others around the world. As a result, international cooperation can help countries solve common problems and understand one another better.

However, globalisation can also have some negative effects. Local traditions and languages may become less popular when people are strongly influenced by foreign cultures. Furthermore, small local businesses may struggle to compete with large international companies. Nevertheless, these problems can be reduced through government support for local businesses and cultural activities.

In conclusion, although globalisation may create some challenges for local cultures and businesses, I believe that its benefits are greater. It can increase economic opportunities, improve education and encourage communication between nations. Therefore, countries should cooperate internationally while also protecting their local traditions and businesses.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing the view that increased international interaction through globalisation is positive, while also acknowledging potential negative effects on local cultures and businesses. A clear position is maintained throughout the essay and reiterated in the conclusion. Ideas are well developed and supported with relevant explanations and examples, such as the mention of Indian companies collaborating with international firms to improve services and local employment. The progression of arguments is logical and directly answers the task requirements, aligning comfortably with the Band 7 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay displays clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from an introduction to economic benefits in paragraph two, educational and cooperative benefits in paragraph three, counter-arguments regarding local culture and business in paragraph four, and finally a balanced conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'Moreover', and 'However' are used effectively to guide the reader through the text, although paragraphing and referencing are straightforward. The overall structure is sound and coherent, satisfying the requirements for Band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates an adequate and generally precise range of vocabulary suitable for an academic task. Less common lexical items and collocations are attempted successfully, such as 'employment opportunities', 'foreign companies', and 'international cooperation'. Word choice is generally appropriate, and spelling is accurate throughout the text. While the vocabulary control is solid and allows for clear communication, the range stops short of the more sophisticated and flexible lexical resource required for higher bands, making Band 7 an appropriate score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional and participial clauses such as 'when people are strongly influenced by foreign cultures' and 'which has helped them improve their services'. Grammar and punctuation are handled with good control, and the majority of sentences are error-free. The occasional minor slips do not impede communication at all. The grammatical control and structural variety comfortably meet the criteria for Band 7.
