Student answer (Band 7.5)
Globalisation has accelerated dramatically in recent decades, largely owing to the internet, international air travel, global trade and popular culture. While some people believe that closer interaction between nations has negative consequences, I believe it is largely beneficial when managed responsibly.
On the one hand, globalisation brings substantial economic and social benefits. International trade allows countries to specialise in industries where they have a competitive advantage, stimulating economic growth and creating employment opportunities. Moreover, the internet has revolutionised cross-border communication, enabling students, researchers and professionals to exchange knowledge almost instantaneously. Consequently, international cooperation can accelerate innovation and improve access to education, healthcare and technology. In this way, greater interaction can contribute to higher living standards across societies.
Furthermore, globalisation can promote cross-cultural understanding and mutual respect. People who travel, study abroad or consume international media are exposed to different traditions and perspectives, which can reduce stereotypes and encourage tolerance. Nevertheless, excessive global integration may contribute to cultural homogenisation, as international brands and entertainment can overshadow local customs. Therefore, governments should embrace international cooperation while taking measures to preserve cultural heritage and support local communities. In addition, educational programmes can help younger generations appreciate their own heritage while engaging confidently with other cultures. This would allow societies to benefit from global opportunities without sacrificing their distinctive identities and traditions.
In conclusion, although globalisation may create challenges for cultural diversity, its ability to promote economic development, knowledge-sharing and international understanding makes greater interaction between nations highly beneficial. The most effective approach is to maximise these advantages while limiting its potential social and cultural costs.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the task prompt. It discusses the view that increased international interaction through globalisation is beneficial while also acknowledging counter-arguments regarding cultural homogenisation, thereby meeting the requirement to discuss the view. Furthermore, a clear position is established in the introduction ('I believe it is largely beneficial when managed responsibly') and maintained consistently throughout the essay. The ideas are well developed and extended with relevant explanations and examples, such as economic specialisation, cross-border communication, and educational programmes to preserve cultural heritage. The response easily meets the requirements for a Band 8 descriptor, as it covers all parts of the task well with fully supported ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay displays clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are coherently sequenced, moving smoothly from the introduction to economic and social benefits, followed by cultural considerations, and concluding with a balanced summary. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct sub-topic. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'Moreover', 'Consequently', 'Furthermore', and 'Nevertheless' are used flexibly and effectively to guide the reader through the argument without feeling mechanical. Referencing throughout the text is clear and precise, satisfying all criteria for a Band 7.5 to 8.0 performance.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.5
The student demonstrates a wide, fluent, and flexible lexical range suitable for an academic essay. Less common vocabulary items and collocations are used skilfully and naturally throughout the text, such as 'accelerated dramatically', 'competitive advantage', 'cross-border communication', and 'cultural homogenisation'. Word choice and collocations are generally very precise, with only occasional minor awkwardness. Spelling and word formation are entirely accurate across the entire response. This performance strongly aligns with the Band 8 descriptor for lexical resource.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response features a wide range of complex sentence structures used with a high degree of flexibility and control. The majority of sentences are error-free, and subordinate clauses, participial phrases, and conditional ideas are handled with impressive accuracy (e.g., 'People who travel, study abroad or consume international media are exposed to different traditions...'). Punctuation is used correctly throughout to structure complex thoughts. Only very occasional, non-systematic slips are present, which does not detract from the overall high quality of grammatical control. This easily justifies a Band 8 score.
