Student answer (Band 7.5)

Globalisation, driven by advances in technology, transportation and trade, has connected nations more closely than ever before. While many people view this growing interconnectedness as beneficial, others are concerned about its negative effects. This essay will discuss both perspectives before giving my own opinion.

There are several strong arguments in favour of globalisation. Firstly, it has made trade between countries much easier, allowing nations to specialise in what they produce best and exchange goods and services more efficiently. This has helped raise living standards in many developing countries by creating jobs and attracting foreign investment. Secondly, globalisation has encouraged the exchange of ideas and culture. Through the internet and international travel, people can now learn about different cultures, languages and traditions without leaving their homes, which promotes mutual understanding and reduces prejudice between nations.

However, there are also valid concerns about the effects of globalisation. One issue is that it can lead to the loss of local traditions and cultural identity, as Western culture, in particular, tends to dominate global media and consumer trends. Smaller cultures may struggle to compete and could eventually disappear. Additionally, globalisation has been linked to growing inequality, both within and between countries. Multinational corporations often benefit the most, while local businesses and workers in developing nations can be exploited through low wages and poor working conditions.

In my opinion, the benefits of globalisation outweigh its drawbacks, provided that governments take steps to manage its negative consequences. For example, policies that protect local industries and ensure fair labour practices can help distribute the benefits of globalisation more evenly. Furthermore, individuals and communities can take active steps to preserve their cultural heritage even as they engage with the wider world.

In conclusion, while globalisation brings both advantages and disadvantages, I believe that the increased cooperation and exchange between nations ultimately contributes more to global progress than harm, as long as its challenges are properly addressed.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response fully addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the views on globalisation and providing a clear, well-supported personal opinion throughout. In the second and third paragraphs, the writer presents well-developed arguments regarding the economic and cultural pros and cons of globalisation, citing specific points such as trade specialisation, job creation, cultural exchange, the dominance of Western media, and inequality. Furthermore, the position is reinforced in the conclusion and balanced thoughtfully with the caveat that government intervention can mitigate drawbacks. The ideas are extended effectively and supported with relevant explanations, fully aligning with the Band 8 descriptor for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The response exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are logically sequenced, moving smoothly from a clear introduction to well-defined body paragraphs discussing opposing sides, followed by a nuanced personal opinion and a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices are used effectively and flexibly without being intrusive, as seen in transitions like 'Firstly', 'Secondly', 'However', and 'Furthermore'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct central topic. Referencing and substitution are managed well, maintaining clear cohesion throughout the entire essay, corresponding strongly to a Band 8 level.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

The student demonstrates a wide, fluent, and flexible range of vocabulary suited to an academic discussion on globalisation. Less common lexical items and collocations are used skillfully, such as 'interconnectedness', 'foreign investment', 'cultural identity', 'consumer trends', and 'cultural heritage'. Word choice and collocations are generally precise, with only very rare or natural phrasing used. Spelling and word formation are entirely accurate throughout the text. The lexical range easily satisfies the Band 8 criteria, as the vocabulary is sophisticated, natural, and allows for precise expression of complex socioeconomic concepts.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The writer uses a wide range of complex structures with a high degree of flexibility and accuracy. Sentences such as 'While many people view this growing interconnectedness as beneficial, others are concerned about its negative effects' and 'In my opinion, the benefits of globalisation outweigh its drawbacks, provided that governments take steps to manage its negative consequences' showcase excellent control over subordinate clauses and conditional forms. The vast majority of sentences are completely error-free, and punctuation is handled with precision. Only occasional non-systematic slips could separate this from a top-tier band, placing it comfortably at Band 8.
