Student answer (Band 6.5)

Nowadays, it is often argued that through the internet, air travel, trade and popular culture, globalisation has increased considerably; however, many people believe that the increased interaction between countries through globalisation is beneficial. This essay will discuss this notion in the forthcoming paragraphs, supported by suitable examples, before presenting my own opinion.

To commence with, many people believe that the increased conversation between nations through globalisation is a positive thing. This is primarily because many countries around the globe often lack basic infrastructures and are still underdeveloped in various aspects. For example, many fast-growing nations started to invest funds in these types of countries to provide better industrial and hospital infrastructures, by promoting their organisations to perform global operations. As a result, it leads to more and more employment opportunities and raises standard of living.

Furthermore, another reason why people support this notion is that it will help in cultural adaptations all around the world. This is mainly because of the internet, air travel and trade deals between nations. Subsequently, the foreign-owned firms will include western cultures and traditions so to ensure proper exchange of goods and values, we genuinely need to acknowledge their cultural beliefs. For instance, in many countries, local and foreign-owned companies collaborate with each other to provide effective solutions of any problem and can serve in the best interests of the citizens. Consequently, it will help understanding the western work culture more efficiently.

To conclude, in my opinion, I believe that this is a positive aspect because of the standard of living it increases and the adaption of different cultures; hence, it contributes to not only individual's life but also to economic growth of the nation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by discussing the view that globalisation is beneficial and providing a clear personal opinion. The writer establishes a position in the introduction and maintains it throughout the essay, concluding by reiterating the stance. Main ideas are presented, such as economic investment in developing countries and cultural exchange, and they are supported with reasons and examples. However, some ideas lack deep extension or contain slightly vague explanations, such as the mechanism of how foreign firms include western cultures. Consequently, the development of ideas aligns well with the Band 7 descriptor, where all parts are addressed and a clear position is maintained, though some supporting points could be more fully elaborated.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay displays a clear overall progression and logical organisation. Each body paragraph opens with a clear topic sentence, such as 'To commence with, many people believe that...' and 'Furthermore, another reason why people support this notion is that...'. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, though some transitions like 'Subsequently' and 'Consequently' are slightly formulaic or mechanically applied. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct arguments and the introduction and conclusion. Referencing is generally clear throughout the text, allowing the reader to follow the argument smoothly. Overall, the organisational structure and cohesive features comfortably meet the criteria for a Band 7 score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to allow some flexibility and precision, using phrases such as 'globalisation has increased considerably', 'infrastructure', 'underdeveloped', and 'economic growth'. Less common lexical items are attempted, including 'infrastructure', 'collaboration', and 'propose/provide effective solutions'. There are occasional slight awkwardnesses in word choice and collocation, such as 'cultural adaptations' instead of 'cultural adaptation' or 'conversation between nations' when discussing interaction. However, these minor inaccuracies do not impede communication, and spelling is accurate throughout, reflecting the characteristics of Band 6.5 to 7.0. A Band 6.0 is awarded as vocabulary control fluctuates slightly in precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating relative clauses and conditional elements, such as 'This is primarily because many countries around the globe often lack basic infrastructures and are still underdeveloped in various aspects.' There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, for instance, 'so to ensure proper exchange' and 'help understanding the western work culture' (which should be 'help in understanding' or 'help understand'). Punctuation is generally sound, and despite the presence of occasional errors, they rarely impede communication. The control over grammar and sentence variety matches the requirements for Band 6.
