Student answer (Band 7.5)

In recent decades, globalisation has significantly increased interaction between countries through the internet, international travel, trade and popular culture. While some people argue that this development has brought considerable benefits, others believe that it has created serious problems. In my opinion, although globalisation has certain disadvantages, its overall impact has been positive because it has encouraged economic development, cultural exchange and greater access to information.

One major advantage of globalisation is that it has created more opportunities for economic growth. International trade allows countries to sell their products to foreign markets and import goods that may be unavailable or more expensive domestically. In addition, global companies can invest in developing countries, creating employment and transferring knowledge and technology. For example, many technology and manufacturing companies have established operations in countries such as India and Vietnam, providing jobs and contributing to economic development. As a result, globalisation can improve living standards in countries that successfully participate in international markets.

Another important benefit is the increased exchange of knowledge and culture. The internet has made it possible for people to communicate with others around the world almost instantly. Students can access educational resources from foreign universities, while workers can learn new skills through international courses and online platforms. Globalisation has also enabled people to experience different cultures through music, films, food and travel. This interaction can help people understand other societies and reduce cultural misunderstandings. For instance, international tourism allows visitors to experience different traditions directly rather than relying only on stereotypes.

However, globalisation can also have negative consequences. Increased international competition may cause some local businesses to struggle against larger foreign companies. In addition, the spread of global consumer culture can sometimes weaken traditional customs and languages, particularly among younger generations. Globalisation may also increase economic inequality if the benefits of international trade and investment are concentrated among wealthy individuals and large corporations. Furthermore, greater international dependence means that economic problems in one country can spread rapidly to others.

Despite these disadvantages, I believe that the benefits of globalisation outweigh its drawbacks when it is properly managed. Governments can protect local industries and cultural heritage while still participating in international trade and cooperation. Similarly, education can help people benefit from global opportunities without abandoning their cultural identity.

In conclusion, globalisation has undoubtedly created challenges, particularly for local businesses and cultural traditions. Nevertheless, the greater access to knowledge, international cooperation, employment opportunities and cultural exchange that it provides makes increased interaction between nations a largely positive development.

Overall7.5

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all parts of the task, discussing both the view that globalisation is positive and providing a well-supported personal opinion. The position is clear throughout the text, established in the introduction and reinforced in the conclusion. The ideas are well developed with relevant examples, such as technology companies in India and Vietnam, and international tourism. The writer covers both the benefits, such as economic growth and cultural exchange, and the drawbacks, such as increased competition and threats to local traditions, ensuring a balanced and thorough discussion that aligns closely with Band 8 requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are coherently linked, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the prompt. Cohesive devices such as 'One major advantage', 'Another important benefit', 'However', and 'In conclusion' are used flexibly and appropriately to guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is fully logical and well-managed, with each body paragraph dedicated to a specific theme. Referencing is clear and unambiguous, satisfying the criteria for a strong Band 7 or Band 8 performance.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient to wide range of vocabulary for the task, allowing for flexibility and precision. Less common lexical items are used effectively with good awareness of style and collocation, such as 'considerable benefits', 'economic development', 'cultural exchange', and 'cultural heritage'. While vocabulary choice is generally natural and accurate, there are occasional minor limitations or standard collocations rather than truly sophisticated uncommon phrasing. However, communication is effortless throughout, supporting a solid Band 7 score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The writer displays a wide range of grammatical structures, successfully integrating complex sentences with subordinate clauses, conditional elements, and participial phrases (e.g., 'While some people argue that this development has brought considerable benefits, others believe that it has created serious problems'). The majority of sentences are error-free, showing very good control of grammar and punctuation. Errors are extremely rare and do not impede communication in any way. This level of accuracy combined with structural variety comfortably meets the criteria for Band 8.
