Student answer (Band 5.5)

Globalisation has become a major part of modern life worldwide. The internet, international travel, trade and popular culture have made it much easier for people from different countries to communicate and interact with each other. While some people believe that this development is beneficial, others are concerned about its negative effects. In my opinion, increased interaction between nations is generally a positive development.

One major advantage of globalisation is that it allows people to learn from other cultures, exchange pf ideas and culture. Through social media, films, travel and online platforms, people can easily understand different lifestyles, traditions and ideas. This can reduce misunderstandings and create better relationships between countries. For example, students can communicate with people from different parts of the world and learn about their cultures without travelling there.

Another important benefit is the growth of international trade and employment opportunities. Companies can sell their products in different countries, while people can find jobs or study opportunities abroad. In addition, countries can share knowledge and technology with each other.

However, globalisation also has some disadvantages. The increasing popularity of international brands and Western entertainment may cause local traditions and languages to become less important, particularly among younger generations, these contents will influence theme and their thinking. Moreover, smaller businesses can sometimes struggle to compete with big companies.

In conclusion, although globalisation can have some negative effects, I believe that greater interaction between nations is mainly beneficial. It provides opportunities for cultural exchange, cooperation, education and economic growth.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing the views on globalisation and providing a clear personal opinion. The position is maintained throughout the essay. However, there is a penalty to consider regarding length: the response contains 249 words, which is one word short of the 250-word minimum requirement. While the ideas presented are relevant and appropriately supported—such as mentioning cultural exchange, education, and international trade—the slight under-length prevents the development from being fully extended. Despite this minor shortfall, the main arguments are clear and the topic is adequately covered, aligning well with the expectations for a Band 6.0 performance.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with clear paragraphing that separates the introduction, body paragraphs addressing advantages and disadvantages, and the conclusion. Logical progression is evident, and basic cohesive devices are utilised to connect ideas, as seen with phrases like 'One major advantage', 'Another important benefit', and 'However'. Nevertheless, referencing and cohesion are occasionally simplistic or slightly mechanical. For instance, the sentence 'particularly among younger generations, these contents will influence theme and their thinking' creates a run-on structure and faulty referencing within the sentence. Despite these occasional cohesive flaws, the information is generally easy to follow, supporting a Band 6.0 score for this criterion.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms related to the prompt such as 'globalisation', 'international trade', 'employment opportunities', and 'cultural exchange'. There are, however, some noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasings, such as 'exchange pf ideas' (a typo for 'exchange of ideas') and 'influence theme and their thinking' where 'theme' is incorrectly used. Less common vocabulary is attempted with mixed success. Spelling and word choice are generally sufficient to convey meaning without impeding the reader, making this a solid performance at the Band 6.0 level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses effectively in sentences such as 'While some people believe that this development is beneficial, others are concerned about its negative effects.' There are several grammatical errors and punctuation issues present, notably the comma splice in 'particularly among younger generations, these contents will influence theme and their thinking.' Other minor slips occur, but the errors do not impede communication. The control of grammar is reasonably good overall, justifying a Band 6.0 score.
