Student answer (Band 7.0)
Globalisation has increased rapidly in recent years because of the internet, air travel, international trade and popular culture. While some people believe that greater interaction between countries is beneficial, others argue that it can create certain problems. In my opinion, globalisation has more advantages than disadvantages.
On the one hand, increased interaction between nations can provide many benefits. Firstly, it allows people to share knowledge, technology and ideas more easily. For example, students can study courses from foreign universities through the internet without travelling abroad. Secondly, globalisation creates more opportunities for international trade and employment. Companies can sell their products in other countries, which can increase economic growth and create jobs. Moreover, people can learn about different cultures through travel, films, music and social media, which can improve understanding between nations.
On the other hand, globalisation can also have negative effects. One major concern is that local cultures and traditions may gradually become less popular as international culture becomes more influential. For instance, young people may prefer foreign fashion, food and entertainment instead of traditional practices. Another disadvantage is that increased international trade can make smaller local businesses struggle to compete with large multinational companies. In addition, countries can become economically dependent on other nations, which may create difficulties when international markets experience problems.
In my view, despite these disadvantages, globalisation is generally a positive development. The exchange of knowledge, technology, education and economic opportunities can significantly improve people's lives. However, governments should also take steps to protect local cultures and support small businesses so that the benefits of globalisation can be shared more widely.
In conclusion, globalisation can lead to both cultural and economic challenges, but it also creates valuable opportunities for cooperation, education and development. Therefore, I believe that increased interaction between nations is largely beneficial when it is managed responsibly.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The student has fully addressed all parts of the task by discussing both views on globalisation (the benefits and the drawbacks) and clearly stating their own opinion throughout the essay. The position is well-developed from the introduction through the body paragraphs and into the conclusion. For example, the student provides clear arguments for the advantages, such as knowledge-sharing and economic growth, while also acknowledging valid counter-arguments regarding local culture and economic dependency. The ideas are extended and supported with relevant examples, such as students studying via the internet and young people preferring foreign fashion. The response meets the Band 7 and touches upon Band 8 descriptors well, demonstrating a clear and well-rounded treatment of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from the introduction to the benefits, the drawbacks, the student's personal view, and finally a succinct conclusion. The student uses cohesive devices effectively, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Moreover', which guide the reader effortlessly through the arguments. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, ensuring the text is structured in a visually and logically appealing manner. The referencing and substitution throughout the text are clear and unobtrusive, aligning well with the characteristics of a strong band 7.5 performance.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates an adequate to wide range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic discussion on globalisation. Words and phrases like 'international trade', 'economic growth', 'economic dependency', and 'multinational companies' are used naturally and with good precision. Less common lexical items are attempted, such as 'traditional practices' and 'managed responsibly'. While the vocabulary is mostly standard rather than highly sophisticated, it is deployed with a high degree of accuracy and no awkward collocations that would impede communication. Spelling and word choice are consistently accurate throughout the entire response, easily securing a solid band 7.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The student shows good control of grammar and punctuation, utilising a variety of both simple and complex sentence structures. Examples of complex structures include conditional or concessive clauses such as 'While some people believe that greater interaction between countries is beneficial, others argue that...' and relative clauses like '...which can increase economic growth and create jobs.' The majority of sentences are error-free, and any grammatical or punctuation errors are virtually absent. Punctuation is handled correctly across all paragraphs, allowing the reader to follow the train of thought without difficulty. This high level of structural accuracy and variety merits a strong band 8.0.
