Student answer (Band 6.5)
In recent years, globalisation has expanded rapidly due to advancements in the internet, international trade, air travel and cultural exchange. While some people believe that increased interaction between countries has brought significant benefits, others argue that it can create several problems. In my opinion, globalisation is a positive development because it promotes economic growth, knowledge sharing and cultural understanding.
One of the main advantages of globalisation is that it strengthens economic relationships between nations. International trade allows countries to exchange goods and services, creating new business opportunities and employment. For example, developing countries can attract foreign investment from multinational companies, which helps improve infrastructure and increase living standards. Furthermore, globalisation enables countries to access advanced technologies and expertise that can support their economic development.
Another important benefit is the exchange of knowledge and culture. Through the internet and international travel, people can learn about different traditions, languages and lifestyles. This interaction can reduce cultural misunderstandings and encourage cooperation between nations. In addition, students and professionals can benefit from studying or working abroad, gaining valuable skills and international experience.
However, some people argue that globalisation has negative consequences. They believe that increased international competition can harm local businesses, while the spread of global culture may threaten traditional customs. Moreover, multinational industries can sometimes contribute to environmental problems by increasing pollution and resource consumption.
Despite these concerns, I believe that the advantages of globalisation outweigh its disadvantages. Although it can create certain challenges, these problems can be managed through effective government policies and sustainable practices. Overall, globalisation has played an essential role in connecting the world and improving opportunities for individuals and nations.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the task by discussing both the views surrounding globalisation and presenting a clear, well-supported personal opinion. The introduction clearly outlines the stance that globalisation is a positive development, and the body paragraphs logically explore both the benefits—such as economic growth through international trade and knowledge sharing—and the counter-arguments regarding local businesses and the environment. The student extends and supports these ideas with relevant explanations, such as mentioning how developing countries attract foreign investment. The position is maintained consistently throughout the essay, meeting all criteria for a Band 7.0 or Band 7.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, moving smoothly from introduction to economic benefits, cultural benefits, counter-arguments, and a balanced conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Another important benefit', and 'Despite these concerns' are used effectively to guide the reader through the arguments. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, contributing to an overall coherent piece of writing. The referencing of ideas and logical links are well managed, satisfying the requirements for Band 7.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with good flexibility and precision, suitable for an academic response. Phrases such as 'significant benefits', 'foreign investment', 'multinational companies', and 'sustainable practices' show an awareness of style and collocation appropriate to the topic of globalisation. While the vocabulary is generally precise and communicates ideas effectively, it stops just short of the wide, flexible range of less common lexical items required for Band 8.0. Minor inaccuracies in word choice are virtually absent, placing this securely at a Band 7.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, demonstrating control over grammar and punctuation. Complex structures such as 'While some people believe that increased interaction between countries has brought significant benefits, others argue that it can create several problems' and 'Although it can create certain challenges, these problems can be managed...' are handled with accuracy. There are frequent error-free sentences, and any minor slips do not impede communication. The control of tense, modal verbs, and clause subordination aligns well with the Band 7.0 descriptors.
