Student answer (Band 7.0)
Globalisation has significantly increased in recent years due to developments in the internet, air travel, international trade and popular culture. While some people argue that greater interaction between nations has brought many benefits, others believe that it can have negative consequences. In my opinion, although globalisation has certain drawbacks, its overall impact is positive.
One major advantage of globalisation is that it allows countries to exchange knowledge, ideas and technology more easily. For example, students can now access online courses and educational resources from universities around the world without travelling abroad. Similarly, businesses can cooperate with international companies, which can encourage innovation and create new employment opportunities. Globalisation also enables people from different cultures to communicate with one another, which can increase cultural understanding and reduce misunderstandings between nations.
However, increased global interaction can also create certain problems. One concern is that local cultures and traditions may gradually become less influential as international popular culture spreads. Young people, in particular, may adopt foreign lifestyles, languages and consumer habits. In addition, greater international trade can increase competition for local businesses, especially smaller companies that may struggle to compete with large multinational corporations.
Despite these disadvantages, I believe that the benefits of globalisation outweigh its negative effects. International cooperation can improve access to education, technology and economic opportunities, while cultural exchange can help people become more open-minded and aware of different ways of life. Nevertheless, governments should take steps to protect local businesses and cultural traditions while continuing to benefit from international cooperation.
In conclusion, globalisation has made countries more closely connected than ever before. Although it can put pressure on local cultures and businesses, I believe that its contribution to education, economic development and international understanding makes it a largely beneficial development.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The student has fully addressed all parts of the task prompt by discussing both views regarding globalisation and clearly stating their own opinion from the introduction through to the conclusion. In the second and third paragraphs, relevant arguments are provided for both sides, such as the exchange of knowledge, innovation, cultural homogenisation, and economic competition for small businesses. The position is well-developed and supported with logical explanations throughout the essay, demonstrating a strong understanding of the academic task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Information and ideas are coherently linked, starting from a well-formulated introduction, moving smoothly through balanced body paragraphs, and finishing with a concise conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'One major advantage', 'Similarly', 'However', and 'Despite these disadvantages' are used effectively to guide the reader through the arguments. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct central topic.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient and generally precise range of vocabulary suitable for an academic essay. Less common lexical items and collocations are used effectively, including phrases such as 'cultural homogenisation', 'multinational corporations', and 'open-minded'. Word choices are mostly accurate and contribute to a natural and fluent style. Although there are no major lexical errors, the vocabulary occasionally leans toward standard academic tropes rather than highly sophisticated or nuanced expressions, which keeps this criterion firmly at a solid band 7.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5
The writer employs a good variety of complex sentence structures with frequent error-free sentences. Examples such as 'While some people argue that greater interaction between nations has brought many benefits, others believe that it can have negative consequences' and 'although globalisation has certain drawbacks, its overall impact is positive' show good control over subordination and punctuation. Grammar and punctuation are well managed throughout the text, and any minor slips do not impede communication in any way.
