Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent years , with the coming of better technology and advancements in the digital world , and improved mechanism in air travel , trade and popular culture , globalisation saw an ever-increasing trend . But this leaves us witha dilemma - globalisation : a boon or boom

globalisation is the process of rapid interaction between governments , people and companies of various countries . A major part of globalisation is MNC's or multi national cooperations . These are companies that have set up production units and markets in one or more countries . MNC's play a huge part in globalisation . They first start by investing a huge amount in a countries finance , amd setting up production units next to local labourers for cheap and easy labour . Thsese companies then provide these labourers with the latest equipment for better productivity.

Globalisation is a massive boom for a developing country . As more and more global countries come to a developing country to start up shops , the countries economy increases , which can lead to improved standards of living of citizens . To attract these companies , the hosting country can set up certain special zones , where the company gets free water , free transport , free recreational centres , good buildings with apt infrastrutcutre etc .

Overall , I believe that globalisation should be promoted , and that countries should do their best to attract multi national coorporations to set up production units in thier country . These not only help in the country's economy and development , but also in the citizens life , as they migrate from one country to another in search of job oppurtunities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the views on globalisation and providing a clear personal opinion in the introduction and conclusion. The writer explains what multinational corporations are and discusses economic benefits such as improved standards of living and infrastructure. However, the development tends to focus heavily and narrowly on MNCs rather than the broader cultural, social, and technological aspects of globalisation mentioned in the introduction. The ideas are relevant and supported, but remain somewhat limited and under-developed, sliding into generalisations about free water and transport. This performance aligns best with Band 6.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear stance and paragraph structure. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving from definition to economic impacts and finally a concluding opinion. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. There are issues with punctuation spacing around commas, and the transitional links between sentences can feel abrupt. For instance, moving from the definition of MNCs to their investment strategies lacks smooth cohesive tying. Paragraphing is used, but internal flow prevents the text from reaching a Band 7. This corresponds to Band 6.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully employing terms like 'globalisation', 'multinational corporations', 'infrastructure', and 'productivity'. There are, however, noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, such as 'mechanism' instead of 'mechanisms', 'coorporations' instead of 'corporations', 'thier' instead of 'their', and 'oppurtunities' instead of 'opportunities'. Furthermore, phrases like 'start up shops' are slightly informal. These errors do not impede communication, placing the response solidly in Band 6.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilising relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation. Punctuation errors are particularly prominent, with spaces consistently placed before commas and periods. There are also subject-verb agreement and article errors, such as 'a countries finance' and 'the countries economy increases' (missing apostrophes for possession), alongside occasional typos like 'Thsese'. While complex sentence attempts are visible, the persistent surface errors keep the score at Band 5.5.
