Student answer (Band 5.5)
In recent years due to an increase in globalisation, a debate about whether or not it is a good thing has been brought into light.
With the advent of internet and air travel, the access to sharing cultural practices has been increased. Individulas are now adding traditional practices from other cultures to enhance their celebrations or way of life. Some people love to add different cusines in their regular menu, while others prefer to adopt some words of a different language. This has led to an acceptance of various culture and encourages harmony in people from different backgrounds. A few days back an Indian-American couple went viral for celebrating their wedding in two different ways, honouring the practices of each others culture.
However, some people argue that globalisation has caused people to drift away from their orignal culture. The additions and tweaking of cultural practices is seen as blasphemy to the values of their ancestors. In the coming years the next generation would not have the orignal culture preserved for them. Rather they will be presented a mixture of different practices which will confuse them about their identity. Older generation in Pakisan are very upset that their modestly dressed culture has been replaced by western values for clothing.
Even though I don't deny the good that has come with globalisation, I believe it is very important to hold onto the values of our traditional practices. Mixing up cultures dosen't let you be proud of who you are which is vital for self confidence.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the positive and negative aspects of globalisation and clearly stating the writer's own opinion that it is important to hold onto traditional values. The position is maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are extended with relevant examples, such as the Indian-American couple's wedding and the cultural shift in Pakistan regarding clothing. However, the development of ideas remains slightly brief, and some points could be explored in greater depth to reach a higher band level. Overall, the task is successfully fulfilled with a clear stance and relevant supporting details that satisfy the core requirements of Task 2.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay displays a logical overall progression and is divided into an introduction, body paragraphs addressing both sides of the issue, and a clear conclusion. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'However', 'In the coming years', and 'Even though'. However, paragraphing is somewhat condensed, with the body paragraphs merging multiple ideas into single blocks of text. Referencing is generally clear, though minor mechanical transitions detract from a completely smooth flow. The progression of thought is easy to follow, but paragraph structuring requires more careful segmentation to achieve a higher score.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, with terms like 'globalisation', 'cultural practices', 'harmony', and 'identity'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'advent', 'blasphemy', and 'vital'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, including 'Individulas' instead of 'individuals', 'cusines' instead of 'cuisines', 'culture' instead of 'cultures', and 'orignal' instead of 'original'. These lexical errors occasionally distract the reader, but they do not impede overall communication, placing the response firmly in the band 6 range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over structures such as subordinate clauses ('Even though I don't deny the good that has come with globalisation, I believe...'). There are several grammatical and punctuation errors present in the text, such as 'the access to sharing' instead of 'access to sharing', missing commas, and a spelling error in the contraction 'dosen't'. Despite these frequent errors, they rarely impede communication, and the meaning of the sentences remains clear throughout the response, fitting the criteria for a band 6.
