Student answer (Band 7.5)
In recent decades, globalisation has significantly increased interaction between countries through the internet, international travel, trade and popular culture. While some people argue that this development has brought considerable benefits, others believe that it can have negative consequences. In my opinion, although globalisation has certain disadvantages, its overall impact on international relations and human development is largely positive.
One major advantage of globalisation is that it promotes economic growth and creates greater opportunities for international trade. Businesses can sell their products to customers in different countries, while developing nations can attract foreign investment and create employment opportunities. In addition, globalisation allows countries to exchange knowledge and technology more easily. For example, advances in medicine, education and communication can spread rapidly across borders, enabling societies to benefit from developments made elsewhere.
Another important benefit is increased cultural understanding. International travel, social media, films and other forms of popular culture allow people to learn about different lifestyles, traditions and values. As a result, individuals may become more tolerant of cultural differences and develop a greater sense of connection with people from other parts of the world. Furthermore, international cooperation is essential for addressing global problems such as climate change, pandemics and terrorism, which cannot be effectively tackled by individual countries acting alone.
However, globalisation also has some disadvantages. Increased international competition can put pressure on local businesses, particularly those that cannot compete with large multinational companies. There is also concern that the spread of global popular culture may weaken traditional languages, customs and local identities. Moreover, greater international economic dependence means that financial problems in one country can sometimes affect economies in other parts of the world.
Despite these drawbacks, I believe that the benefits of globalization outweigh its disadvantages. International interaction provides countries with opportunities to share knowledge, improve living standards and develop stronger relationships. The negative effects can also be reduced through appropriate government policies that protect local industries and cultural heritage.
In conclusion, globalization has both positive and negative effects, but increased interaction between nations has generally been beneficial. It has encouraged economic development, cultural exchange and international cooperation, making countries more interconnected than ever before.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt by discussing both the advantages and disadvantages of globalisation while clearly stating the writer's own opinion throughout the essay. The position is well-developed from the introduction through the body paragraphs and reaffirmed in the conclusion. For example, the writer outlines economic growth, cultural understanding, and international cooperation as benefits, while acknowledging competitive pressures and cultural threats as drawbacks. The arguments are extended and well-supported with relevant examples and explanations, fulfilling all requirements of the task descriptor at a high level. Therefore, a band score of 8.0 is fully justified.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The essay demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with economic benefits, moving to cultural and cooperative benefits, addressing counter-arguments, and culminating in a balanced conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'One major advantage', 'Another important benefit', 'However', and 'Despite these drawbacks' are used naturally and effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used skillfully and appropriately to separate distinct themes. Although referencing and cohesion are managed well, minor mechanical elements prevent it from reaching the highest descriptors, placing it comfortably at a band 7.5 or 8.0 range. We award a solid 8.0 for skilful cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.5
The student exhibits a wide and flexible lexical range suitable for an academic response. Less common vocabulary items and collocations are used effectively, such as 'foreign investment', 'international cooperation', 'competitive pressures', and 'cultural heritage'. Word choices are precise, and spelling is accurate throughout the text. The writer demonstrates an awareness of style and collocation, avoiding overly simplistic phrasing while maintaining natural flow. There are only occasional minor limitations, but overall the vocabulary use easily meets the criteria for Band 7.5, rounding to an official 7.5 or 8.0. Given the consistent accuracy and flexibility, an 8.0 is awarded.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5
The response features a wide range of structures, including complex sentences with subordinate clauses ('While some people argue that this development has brought considerable benefits, others believe that it can have negative consequences'). The majority of sentences are error-free, demonstrating a high level of grammatical control and punctuation accuracy. Minor lapses are virtually absent, and complex structures are handled with confidence and ease. The control shown matches the Band 8 descriptor, where the majority of sentences are error-free and only very occasional minor slips might occur. The student's command of grammar significantly supports the clarity and professional tone of the essay.
