Student answer (Band 6.5)
In recent years, globalisation has increased rapidly due to the development of the internet, international travel, trade and popular culture. Many people believe that closer interaction between countries is beneficial. I largely agree with this view because globalisation creates economic opportunities and allows people to exchange knowledge and ideas, although it can also have some negative effects.
One major advantage of globalisation is that it provides greater economic opportunities for countries and individuals. International trade allows businesses to sell their products in foreign markets and gives consumers access to a wider range of goods and services. In addition, companies can invest in other countries and create employment opportunities for local people. For example, many developing countries have attracted international companies, which have provided jobs and contributed to economic growth. Therefore, increased international cooperation can improve living standards in many parts of the world.
Another important benefit is the exchange of knowledge, education and culture. Through the internet, people can communicate with others from different countries and learn about their lifestyles and traditions. Students can also access international courses and educational resources without travelling abroad. Similarly, popular culture such as films, music and food can help people understand and appreciate different cultures. This interaction can reduce cultural misunderstandings and encourage greater cooperation between nations.
However, globalisation can also create certain problems. The increasing influence of international companies and popular culture may cause some local businesses and traditions to become less important. In addition, countries with weaker economies may become too dependent on larger and more powerful nations. Globalisation can also increase competition between workers because companies may move their production to countries where labour is cheaper. Nevertheless, these problems can be reduced through appropriate government policies and support for local industries.
In conclusion, globalisation has some disadvantages, but I believe that the increased interaction between nations is generally beneficial. The economic opportunities, exchange of knowledge and greater understanding between cultures can bring significant advantages to both countries and individuals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response fully addresses all parts of the task. The introduction presents a clear position ('I largely agree with this view because globalisation creates economic opportunities and allows people to exchange knowledge and ideas'), which is maintained throughout the essay. The body paragraphs effectively explore both the economic benefits, such as international trade and job creation in developing nations, and the cultural advantages of globalisation, while thoughtfully acknowledging counterarguments regarding local traditions and economic dependence. Ideas are well developed and extended with relevant supporting examples, placing this performance comfortably at Band 7.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay displays a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with clear topic sentences such as 'One major advantage of globalisation is...' and 'Another important benefit is...'. Cohesive devices are used flexibly and appropriately to guide the reader through the arguments (e.g., 'In addition', 'For example', 'Therefore', 'However', 'In conclusion'). Paragraphing is fully utilised and logical, ensuring a smooth transition from introduction to body and finally to the concluding summary. This meets all requirements for a Band 7 descriptor.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, suitable for an academic discussion. Words and phrases such as 'economic opportunities', 'international cooperation', 'cultural misunderstandings', and 'appropriate government policies' show an awareness of collocation and style. Although the vocabulary is generally standard rather than highly sophisticated, there are no notable spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication. The lexical control is consistent and accurate, supporting a solid Band 7 score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional or concessive clauses ('although it can also have some negative effects', 'while companies may move their production to countries where labour is cheaper'). There is a high frequency of error-free sentences, and control of grammar and punctuation is consistently good throughout the text. Minor slips are virtually absent, and complex structures are handled accurately, demonstrating the control characteristic of a Band 7 performance.
