Student answer (Band 7.5)

Globalisation has led to unprecedented interaction between countries through the rapid development of the internet, international travel, trade and popular culture. While some people argue that this trend has negative consequences, I believe that greater interaction between nations is largely beneficial because it promotes economic development, cultural understanding and the exchange of knowledge.

One major advantage of globalisation is that it creates economic opportunities for both businesses and individuals. Companies can now sell their products and services to customers in other countries, while developing nations can attract foreign investment and create employment. For example, many technology and manufacturing companies have established operations in countries such as India and Vietnam, providing jobs and contributing to economic growth. In addition, international trade gives consumers access to a wider variety of goods, often at more competitive prices.

Globalisation also encourages people from different cultures to understand one another. International travel, social media and global entertainment have made it much easier for people to learn about lifestyles, traditions and values in other parts of the world. For instance, people can watch films from foreign countries, communicate with international friends and experience different cuisines without necessarily travelling abroad. Such interactions can reduce cultural misunderstandings and encourage greater tolerance.

Another important benefit is the rapid exchange of knowledge and ideas. Advances in medicine, education and technology can spread much more quickly when countries cooperate. During international health emergencies, for example, scientists and medical organisations in different countries can share research and develop solutions more efficiently. Similarly, students can access online courses offered by universities around the world, allowing them to acquire knowledge that may not be available locally.

However, globalisation can also create certain problems. The widespread influence of international businesses and popular culture may weaken some traditional customs and local industries. Moreover, countries that become heavily dependent on international trade can be vulnerable to economic problems in other parts of the world. Nevertheless, these disadvantages can be reduced through appropriate government policies that protect local industries and cultural heritage while still allowing countries to benefit from international cooperation.

In conclusion, although globalisation can pose challenges to local cultures and economies, I believe that increased interaction between nations is predominantly a positive development. The economic opportunities, cultural understanding and exchange of knowledge that it creates can contribute significantly to the development of societies around the world.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The student has fully addressed all parts of the task, discussing both the views surrounding globalisation and providing a clear personal opinion right from the introduction. The position is well-maintained throughout the essay. Ideas are thoroughly developed with relevant explanations and examples, such as mentioning technology and manufacturing companies in India and Vietnam, as well as international health emergencies and online education. The arguments in support of globalisation are robustly extended, and the counter-arguments regarding traditional customs and economic dependency are also thoughtfully introduced and addressed. This meets the criteria for a high band by comprehensively covering the prompt without any noticeable omissions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The response features clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct central topic, starting with economic opportunities, moving to cultural understanding, the exchange of knowledge, and finally addressing potential drawbacks before concluding. Cohesive devices are used naturally and effectively, such as 'One major advantage', 'In addition', 'Globalisation also', and 'For instance'. Paragraphing is used skillfully and appropriately to separate distinct ideas and arguments. The relationship between sentences is transparent and easy to follow, representing solid Band 8 performance.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

The student demonstrates a wide and flexible vocabulary range suited to an academic essay. Less common lexical items are used naturally and with good control, such as 'unprecedented interaction', 'foreign investment', 'cultural misunderstandings', 'economic dependency', and 'cultural heritage'. Collocations are generally accurate, and word choices are appropriate for the context. There are only occasional minor limitations or standard choices rather than precise academic precision, but the vocabulary allows the writer to convey precise meanings smoothly and effectively throughout the entire text.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5

The student exhibits a wide range of sentence structures, successfully integrating both simple and complex forms. Complex noun phrases, conditional-like structures, and participial clauses are handled with a high degree of control (e.g., 'Companies can now sell their products and services to customers in other countries, while developing nations can attract foreign investment...'). The majority of sentences are error-free, with proper punctuation and consistent control over subject-verb agreement and tense consistency. Only very occasional minor slips occur, easily aligning the essay with the Band 8 criteria for grammatical range and accuracy.
