IELTS Writing Task 2 question

In recent years, through the internet, air travel, trade and popular culture, globalisation has rapidly increased. Many people believe that the increased interaction between nations through globalisation is a good thing.

Discuss this view and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

It is undeniable that globalization has accelerated dramatically due to technological advancements, expanded trade, and modern aviation. While this phenomenon has sparked some concerns regarding the loss of local identities, I firmly believe that enhanced global interaction is overwhelmingly positive because it drives economic prosperity and fosters international cooperation.

On the one hand, globalization acts as a powerful catalyst for economic development and innovation. The expansion of international trade allows developing nations to access global markets of jobs. Furthermore, the internet enables the instantaneous sharing of scientific research and technological breakthroughs across borders. Culturally, increased air travel and media exposure enrich societies. Frequent interaction with foreign traditions, languages and ideas promotes tolerance, which helps break down long standing prejudices and creates a more harmonious global community.

However, critics often argue that rapid globalization can erode indigenous cultures and disadvantage local businesses that cannot compete with multinational conglomerates. While these are valid concerns, they can be effectively mitigated through robust government policies aimed at protecting domestic industries and preserving cultural heritage. In my opinion, the collaborative benefits of global integration far outweigh these drawbacks. Today's most pressing challenges, such as climate change and global health crises, are inherently borderless. They cannot be resolved by isolated nations and demand the high level of cross border communication that globalization provides.

In conclusion, despite minor challenges related to culture homogenization, the rapid growth of globalization is highly advantageous. Increased international integration not only stimulates widespread economic progress but also equips humankind with the collaborative tools needed to tackle shared global issues.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The student has successfully addressed all parts of the task prompt, discussing both sides of the issue (the benefits of globalization versus concerns regarding cultural erosion) and clearly presenting a personal opinion throughout. In the introduction, the writer states, 'I firmly believe that enhanced global interaction is overwhelmingly positive because it drives economic prosperity and fosters international cooperation.' This position is well-maintained and supported in the body paragraphs. For example, the writer explores economic growth, international scientific collaboration, and the tackling of borderless crises like climate change. The ideas are well-developed and extended logically without major omissions. Therefore, the response comfortably earns a Band 8.0 for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay displays a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Ideas are logically sequenced, moving smoothly from the introduction to the economic and cultural benefits, then addressing the counter-arguments, and finally concluding. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct central theme. Cohesive devices are managed well, such as 'On the one hand', 'Furthermore', and 'However', which help guide the reader seamlessly through the argument. While cohesion is generally natural and effective, it stops short of the fully unobtrusive control seen at Band 9. Thus, a Band 7.5 is awarded for Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.0

The student demonstrates a wide, fluent, and flexible lexical resource that is well-suited to an academic discussion on globalization. The writer uses sophisticated, less common vocabulary with good awareness of style and collocation, such as 'accelerated dramatically', 'catalyst for economic development', 'multinational conglomerates', and 'indigenous cultures'. There are only occasional minor inaccuracies, such as the slightly awkward phrasing 'access global markets of jobs' instead of 'access to global job markets'. However, these minor issues do not impede communication, and the overall range of vocabulary easily satisfies the criteria for Band 7.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5

The writer showcases a wide range of complex sentence structures with a high degree of accuracy. Sentences such as 'While this phenomenon has sparked some concerns regarding the loss of local identities, I firmly believe that enhanced global interaction is overwhelmingly positive...' demonstrate excellent command of subordinate clauses and complex phrasing. The majority of sentences are error-free, with only very occasional minor slips, such as the missing hyphen in 'long standing' (should be 'long-standing') and 'cross border' (should be 'cross-border'). Grammar and punctuation are tightly controlled throughout, fully justifying a Band 8.0 for Grammatical Range and Accuracy.
