Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt partially, discussing both the benefits of globalisation and the counter-arguments regarding cultural loss and economic inequality, along with a personal view. However, the development of ideas is limited and at times unclear. For instance, the discussion of Singapore as a developed country in the second body paragraph is abruptly connected to technology without clear logical support. Furthermore, the position is not always clearly sustained throughout the essay, as some arguments are repetitive and rely on over-generalised statements, such as the claim about Bangladesh depending on the USA and China. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to present fully developed, well-supported ideas with relevant examples that are clearly explained rather than merely stated.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation present, with distinct paragraphs attempting an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion, and basic transitional markers like 'On the one hand' and 'In conclusion' are used. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression throughout the text. Cohesive devices are frequently inadequate, inaccurate, or overused, and referencing is sometimes unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the flow of arguments smoothly. For example, sentences in the body paragraphs often jump between ideas without proper connecting links, such as the abrupt transition in the third paragraph regarding economic inequalities. To improve, the writer must ensure that sentences and paragraphs are logically linked with accurate and varied cohesive devices to build a clear, progressive argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'globalisation', 'economic growth', and 'identity crisis', but these attempts are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling, such as 'busniess', 'perpective', 'thrend', 'advanceing', 'enquablities', and 'turism'. These errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader in grasping the precise meaning intended. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to expand their lexical range, demonstrate greater precision in word choice and collocations, and significantly improve spelling and word formation control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences and basic combinations. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, leading to grammatical breakdowns, such as in the opening sentence: 'Many countries making good relationships for busniess and benefited ordinary people.' There are frequent errors in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, missing articles, and prepositions, such as 'other argued that just sweet conversation' and 'government should profit for economic growth'. These frequent errors cause difficulty for the reader. To progress, the writer must use a wider variety of complex structures with improved accuracy, paying closer attention to basic sentence architecture and grammatical rules.
