Student answer (Band 7.5)

In the modern era, technological advancements and international trade have accelerated the process of globalisation. While some individuals argue that this rapid global integration has a negative impact on local cultures, I firmly believe that the increased interaction between nations is highly beneficial for economic and social development.

On the one hand, critics of globalisation argue that it can be detrimental to local traditions and domestic businesses. The widespread dominance of Western popular culture and multinational corporations often overshadows unique local heritages. For example, traditional clothing and cuisines are increasingly being replaced by global fast-food chains and international clothing brands. Furthermore, small local businesses frequently suffer because they cannot compete with the substantial financial power of large international companies, which can lead to economic challenges for local workers.

On the other hand, the deep interaction between nations brings profound advantages to the global community. Economically, international trade allows countries to share resources, which creates millions of jobs and reduces poverty in developing nations. Socially, air travel and the internet have made cultural exchange easier than ever before. This widespread connection promotes global understanding and reduces racism. Undoubtedly, globalisation has also allowed countries to collaborate on critical global issues, such as health crises and climate change, by sharing scientific knowledge instantly.

In conclusion, although globalisation poses some challenges to local industries and cultural identities, these issues can be managed with protective local policies. In my opinion, the economic growth, job creation, and global unity brought by international interaction are far more valuable, making globalisation a overwhelmingly positive development for the world.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by discussing both views surrounding globalisation and providing a clear, well-supported personal position throughout. In the introduction, you state your stance that globalisation is beneficial for economic and social development, which you then maintain consistently. The body paragraphs present relevant arguments for both sides, such as the threat to local traditions and businesses, contrasted against the economic and social advantages like resource sharing and reduced racism. Ideas are generally well-extended and supported with examples, such as traditional clothing being replaced by global fast-food chains and international trade creating millions of jobs. To push even further towards the highest band, your arguments could benefit from slightly deeper nuance and more specific, less generalised real-world examples, avoiding minor tendencies to over-generalize.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

There is a clear logical organisation and progression throughout the essay. The response follows a classic four-paragraph structure, moving smoothly from introduction to counter-argument, main supporting arguments, and a definitive conclusion. You make good use of cohesive devices to guide the reader, such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'Furthermore', and 'In conclusion'. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct central topic. Referencing and substitution are handled skilfully to maintain a smooth flow of ideas. To achieve an even higher standard, cohesive devices could be integrated with slightly more variety and subtlety so that their mechanical nature is completely unnoticeable.

Lexical Resource: Band 7.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary with some flexibility and precision, successfully using less common lexical items with good awareness of style and collocation. Phrases such as 'accelerated the process of globalisation', 'widespread dominance', 'multinational corporations', and 'profound advantages' show a strong grasp of academic register. Word choice is generally accurate, and your spelling is entirely correct throughout the piece. To reach the highest band, you could incorporate even more sophisticated, idiomatic, or less common phrasing, such as precise academic collocations or nuanced synonyms to avoid any slight repetitiveness in your vocabulary choices.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5

The response features a good variety of complex structures and a high frequency of error-free sentences. You successfully control complex grammatical patterns, such as concessive clauses ('While some individuals argue that...') and conditional or participial relationships ('which creates millions of jobs', 'making globalisation an overwhelmingly positive development'). Control of punctuation and agreement is strong, with very few errors. To elevate this criterion further, you could experiment with a wider array of advanced structures, such as inversion or more complex subordinate clauses, while maintaining absolute syntactic precision.
