Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially, earning a mid-level score for Task Achievement. The student attempts to discuss whether the increased interaction through globalisation is a good thing and gives an opinion, but the ideas remain quite limited and under-developed. For instance, the introduction relies heavily on copying the wording of the prompt rather than paraphrasing effectively. Throughout the body paragraphs, assertions are made—such as globalisation helping with 'stress reduction and cognitive development'—without sufficient explanation, specific examples, or robust elaboration. The writer's position is stated, but it lacks the depth required to fully explore both the benefits and the broader nuances of globalisation. To move to a higher level, the writer needs to expand on their arguments with concrete examples, develop each main point fully, and ensure all parts of the prompt receive balanced and thorough attention.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response shows some organisation, but lacks a clear overall progression, reflecting the characteristics of this level. While the essay is divided into paragraphs, the internal logic within paragraphs feels repetitive and circular, particularly in the final paragraph where ideas about social connection and stress reduction are restated multiple times. Cohesive devices are used, but they tend to be basic and sometimes mechanical, such as the repeated reliance on 'Moreover', 'Secondly', and 'In my opinion'. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, making the flow of ideas disjointed at times. To achieve a higher band score, the writer must improve the logical progression between sentences and paragraphs, employ a wider and more natural range of cohesive devices without overusing formulaic transitions, and ensure that each new sentence clearly builds upon the previous one rather than simply repeating the core premise.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The lexical resource displayed is limited but minimally adequate for the task. The student uses a basic vocabulary range appropriate for discussing general concepts, such as 'globalisation', 'economies', 'markets', and 'living standards'. However, there are noticeable lexical shortcomings, including word-form errors like 'intergration' instead of integration, and awkward phrasing such as 'grow positively in their economy'. The vocabulary remains somewhat repetitive, and the attempt to use less common items is restricted. These lexical limitations and errors may occasionally cause some difficulty or hesitation for the reader. To progress, the writer should incorporate a broader variety of precise vocabulary, master word derivations and collocations, and refine their spelling and word choices to express ideas with greater clarity and style.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures with frequent errors that can occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. There is a heavy reliance on simple sentences and basic subject-verb patterns, accompanied by errors in subject-verb agreement, such as 'Internet, air travel, trade and popular culture has rapidly increased' where the plural subject incorrectly takes a singular verb. Attempts at complex sentences are sometimes faulty or overly formulaic, and punctuation is occasionally basic. While communication is generally maintained despite these flaws, the persistent grammatical inaccuracies prevent the writing from reaching a higher band. To improve, the writer needs to exercise greater control over basic grammatical agreements, reduce error frequency in complex sentence structures, and broaden their grammatical repertoire.
