Student answer (Band 8.0)

In recent years, globalisation has rapidly accelerated through the internet, air travel, and international trade. While critics argue that this trend threatens local identities, I believe globalisation is overwhelmingly positive because it drives economic prosperity and fosters global unity.

First, globalisation acts as a powerful catalyst for economic development. The expansion of international trade and cross-border investments has allowed businesses to access vast global markets, creating millions of jobs in developing nations. Furthermore, multinational manufacturing and streamlined supply chains have significantly lowered production costs. As a result, essential goods, medical supplies, and advanced technologies have become more affordable and accessible to everyday consumers worldwide.

Second, increased interaction between nations builds deeper cultural understanding and collaboration. Through internet platforms, social media, and affordable air travel, people can easily experience and appreciate different lifestyles, languages, and traditions. This continuous exchange breaks down harmful stereotypes and unites people around shared global challenges. For instance, international scientific cooperation—accelerated by global communication networks—allows researchers to share data instantly, leading to faster medical breakthroughs and collaborative solutions for climate change.

Admittedly, globalisation can sometimes lead to cultural homogenization, where dominant global brands and media overshadow local traditions. However, this risk can be effectively managed if nations actively invest in preserving their unique cultural heritage.

In conclusion, despite minor drawbacks regarding cultural preservation, the rapid growth of globalisation is highly beneficial. By boosting national economies and connecting diverse cultures, it paves the way for a more prosperous and cooperative world.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the task well, maintaining a clear and well-developed position throughout regarding the benefits of globalisation. The student explores economic development and cultural understanding with relevant, extended examples such as scientific cooperation and supply chains, while briefly acknowledging counterarguments regarding cultural homogenization. However, the length requirement is not met, as the response falls slightly short of the 250-word minimum, containing 243 words. To reach a higher band, the essay would need to fully satisfy the minimum word count requirement while providing even deeper extension of the counterarguments.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.0

Ideas are logically sequenced, and the essay displays a clear overall progression from introduction to body paragraphs and conclusion. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each body paragraph focusing on a distinct central topic (economic development and cultural understanding). Cohesive devices are well managed and used naturally throughout the text, such as transitional phrases like 'First', 'Furthermore', 'As a result', and 'Admittedly', which guide the reader smoothly through the writer's arguments without mechanical over-use.

Lexical Resource: Band 8.0

The writer demonstrates a wide, fluent, and flexible range of vocabulary, skilfully incorporating uncommon lexical items and demonstrating good awareness of collocation and style. Phrases such as 'powerful catalyst for economic development', 'cross-border investments', 'cultural homogenization', and 'unique cultural heritage' are used accurately. There are only occasional minor inaccuracies, showing strong control over word choice and spelling throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.0

The response features a wide range of complex sentence structures used accurately and flexibly. The majority of sentences are error-free, demonstrating excellent control over verb forms, tenses, subordinate clauses, and punctuation. Complex structures such as participial phrases ('accelerated by global communication networks') and concessive clauses ('While critics argue that...') are handled with precision, with only very rare, non-systematic slips that do not impede communication.
