Student answer (Band 5.0)

In modern times, the internet, trade, air travel, culture is causing globalization, while others argue that the interactions increased between nations by globalization is a beneficial thing. Although both perspectives have some merits, I believe that the internet and trade are playing a vital role in globalization because it allows people to communicate with others and increase the overall economic growth.

On the one hand, a significant reason why people consider the internet is responsible for rapid increase in globalization is that it helps people to communicate from one place to the other. Thanks to the internet that people can expand their business all over the world. For example, individuals can learn about various cultures and traditions using the internet. Consequently, people can use the internet for their welfare and prosperity.

On the other hand, some people believe that globalization plays an important role in strengthen bonds between nations. This is because people can make friends from different regions of the world. Furthermore, globalization has a positive impact on the economic growth. For instance, it helps people to explore other parts of the world, which will promote the tourism. Therefore, globalization has an overall significant role in increasing the interactions among people.

In conclusion, although due to the internet globalization is increasing nowadays, others argue that globalization leads to increase interactions. After considering both perspectives, I firmly believe that globalization is increasing due to the internet, trade and air travel.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response addresses the task only partially, and the length requirement is not met, as the text contains 240 words, which is below the minimum of 250. The position is not always clearly stated or maintained, and the ideas are limited and under-developed. For instance, in the conclusion, the student writes, 'others argue that globalization leads to increase interactions,' which contradicts the premise of the prompt and fails to offer a distinct, well-developed personal viewpoint. While the essay touches upon the internet, trade, and air travel, the arguments lack sufficient extension and supportive evidence, remaining repetitive rather than fully exploring the nuances of globalisation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation evident in the text, and the writer attempts to use standard paragraphing and basic transition signals such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand.' However, there is no clear overall progression throughout the essay. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate, repetitive, or mechanically applied, such as the frequent, unvaried use of 'the internet' and 'globalization' to link sentences. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and the conclusion merely restates previous points rather than providing a logical synthesis, reflecting a limited organisational control typical of this band.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The writer uses a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary for the task. There are noticeable errors in word choice, form, and collocation that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, such as writing 'interactions increased' instead of 'increased interactions' and 'strengthen bonds' missing necessary prepositions or articles. Spelling and word forms show basic control, but attempts at less common lexical items are sparse and sometimes imprecise, restricting the overall lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The essay displays a limited range of structures, with frequent errors that can cause difficulty for the reader. While there are some simple sentence forms, attempts at complex sentences are often faulty, as seen in the opening sentence: 'In modern times, the internet, trade, air travel, culture is causing globalization, while others argue that the interactions increased between nations by globalization is a beneficial thing,' where subject-verb agreement fails and relative clauses are mishandled. Frequent errors persist in articles, verb forms, and prepositional patterns throughout the text.
