Student answer (Band 4.5)

In recent year, through the internet, air travel, trade and popular culture, globalisation has rapidly increased. People believe that the increased interaction between nations through globalisation is a good thing. I also agree with this statement. In my opinion it is a giant platform, Where huge amount of people associate with each other through the internet. Because one can connect with another person from a different country. People can call, talk, send messages to their family, relatives and friends at any time. Perhaps their timing will be different but still they can connect with each others through internet, culture, globalisation, trade, air travel. Like if a person went to abroad to find a source of work which can rebut his family from crisis. In a emergency perhaps he can not be physically there by his family but he always can connect with his family through internet. I have a beautiful memory about globalisation, when i was a child i always wanted to learn english though i had not any device to continue my practice but i was always interested in watching movie and geographical channel. It helped me to improve my english much more day by day. And still I'm learning with globalisation.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response sits at a lower level because it fails to meet the word count requirement, containing only 176 words compared to the minimum of 250 words, with 27 words copied from the prompt left uncounted. Furthermore, the task is only responded to minimally. The writer states an agreement with the topic, but the ideas presented are limited and under-developed. For instance, the mention of family emergencies and personal childhood memories of learning English lack the necessary extension, depth, and academic tone required to thoroughly discuss the complex view of globalisation. To improve, the writer must ensure the length requirement is met and expand fully on well-reasoned arguments with relevant, general examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The essay displays some overall organisation, but there is no clear logical progression throughout the text. Paragraphing is handled very poorly, as the entire response is clumped into a single, massive block of text instead of distinct paragraphs for an introduction, body points, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are also inadequate and sometimes repetitive; for example, the phrase 'connect with each other' and transition words like 'because' and 'and' are overused without creating smooth logical links between sentences. Referencing is occasionally unclear, such as the sudden shift into personal anecdotes without clear signposting. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to divide the text into logical paragraphs and use a wider, more accurate range of cohesive devices to guide the reader seamlessly through the arguments.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic ideas about the internet and communication. There are noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and word form that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, such as writing 'In recent year' instead of years, 'went to abroad' instead of abroad, and 'geographical channel' instead of geography or nature channel. The writer attempts some less common terms like 'globalisation' and 'emergency', but control is weak. To move to a higher band, the student must expand their lexical range beyond everyday words, pay closer attention to natural collocations, and eliminate basic word form errors by proofreading their work carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The grammar demonstrates a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences, and attempts at complex structures are frequently faulty. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that can cause difficulty for the reader. Examples of errors include awkward relative clauses and sentence fragments, such as 'Where huge amount of people associate with each other' and 'Which can rebut his family from crisis'. Punctuation is also problematic, marked by run-on sentences and improper capitalization within clauses. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to demonstrate a greater variety of complex sentence forms, ensure proper subject-verb agreement and article usage, and work on reducing the frequency of basic grammatical errors.
