Student answer (Band 5.5)

In today's world, through the internet, air travel, trade and popular culture, globalisation has rapidly increased. Many people believe that the increased interaction between nations through globalisation is a good thing. I partially agree with this view because it may help a country to improve trade relationship with other nations and help them to improve their defence sector but at the same time, it may sometime lead to weakening the country's currency and exposing the country's weakness.

Firstly, the increased interaction between nations through globalisation can be considered a good thing because this helps countries to improve the trade relationships with other nations. For example, if a country has a limited amount of spieces, they can import them from another country. Secondly, the interaction through globalisation helps a country to improve the defence system. If a country is having a weak defence system, they can import defensive tools and weapons which allows them to strengthen this sector.

On the other hand, there are few drawbacks of this view such as excessive importing of goods may weaken the currency of a country. If a nations in importing goods more than exporting, they are more likely decrease the value of their currency. Thus, the increased interaction between nations through globalisation may sometime lead to weaken the currency. Additionally, this method of interaction can also expose the country's economic, political, technology and military weaknesses. If any nation uses this information in aggressive manner then it might lead to conflict between nations.

In conclusion, I partially believe that the increased interaction between nations through globalisation is a good thing as it helps a country to improve trade relationships with other countries and help in improving the defence sector. However, too much involvement in globalisation may sometime expose the weaknesses of a country and excessive imports can decrease the value of the currency.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses all parts of the task, presenting a clear position throughout the essay. In the introduction, the writer outlines a partial agreement regarding the impact of globalisation, noting both benefits like trade and defence improvements, and drawbacks such as currency devaluation and exposed weaknesses. However, the ideas remain somewhat limited and under-developed. For instance, the arguments regarding importing species and defensive tools are stated simply without being fully extended or supported with deeper reasoning or detailed elaboration. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to expand on these main points with more comprehensive explanations and fully developed examples rather than relying on brief generalisations.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraphing structure, moving logically from an introduction to body paragraphs discussing advantages and disadvantages, followed by a concluding summary. Cohesive devices are used to signal transitions, such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'On the other hand', which helps guide the reader through the text. However, cohesion is sometimes a bit mechanical or repetitive in its sentence-starting patterns. Furthermore, referencing is occasionally imprecise, such as the ambiguous pronoun use in sentences like 'If a nations in importing goods more than exporting, they are more likely decrease the value of their currency.' Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring clearer referencing across sentences would enhance the overall flow and progression of ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the writer's basic points about globalisation, trade, and currency. The student attempts to use some less common vocabulary items, such as 'globalisation', 'defence sector', 'excessive importing', and 'economic, political, technology and military weaknesses'. However, there are noticeable word-form and spelling errors throughout the text that show limitation, such as 'spieces' instead of 'species', 'nations in importing' instead of 'nation is importing', and awkward phrasings like 'defensive tools'. While these vocabulary and spelling slips do not severely impede communication, they restrict the lexical score, and achieving greater precision in word choice and collocations is necessary for a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting relative clauses and conditional structures, such as 'If a country has a limited amount of spieces, they can import them from another country.' However, attempts at complex sentences are frequently marred by grammar errors. There are noticeable issues with subject-verb agreement and singular-plural mismatches, such as 'If a nations in importing' and 'leads to weaken' instead of 'lead to weakening'. Additionally, punctuation and preposition choices within grammatical patterns show occasional errors. While these errors rarely completely impede understanding, their frequency across the essay prevents the grammar from meeting the standards of more advanced control.
