IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates the mechanism of a mechanical arm, and the degree of freedom that the joints give to simulate a human arm.

Overall, the mechanical arm working priciple consists of computer function as a controller. Three motors each has its function such as gripper, elbow and a shoulder, whereas a mechanical design also is needed. However, the project will be an alternative for repeated human jobs such as spraying paint, drilling holes and welding metal.

A computer function as the brain of the mechanical arm by controlling the motors to reach a specific position, whereas the motors are considred as muscles each one is representing a single muscle. One of the motor is used as gripper, where the gripper is self is equiped with a build-in force sensor allowing the last to reach a desirable force. Next, the motor that functions as an elbow and allowing for a flexible movement. However the last motor is used as a shoulder to make the arm raises or lowers.

An extra motor may be added to the base to allow the arm to rotate a 360 degree. However, the purpose of the robotic arm is to do the repeated industrial jobs such as spray paint, drill holes and weld metal, whereas the computer will controll the arm just using the right algorithm.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main components and functions, including computer control, the motors, the gripper, elbow and shoulder, and the industrial alternatives of spraying, drilling and welding. The opening overview also recognises the human-arm comparison. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the diagram shows three motors connected to different parts, not that each motor itself “is” a gripper, elbow or shoulder. The wrist’s ability to flex or rotate is omitted, and the pivot is described as an extra motor at the base, although the diagram labels it as a pivot that enables rotation. The comparison with human muscles is an interpretation rather than a clearly shown feature. More precise reporting of the labelled joints and their functions would make the summary more complete and reliable.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing the controls and uses. This gives the reader a broad route through the information. However, progression within the description is not always clear. The account moves from the gripper to the elbow and shoulder, then returns to the base and rotation, rather than following the arm from its base towards its end. Several uses of “However” do not signal a contrast, and repeated “whereas” links ideas that are not clearly opposed. References such as “the last” and “the last motor” are also difficult to follow. Organise the components in a consistent physical sequence and use linking words only when their relationship is accurate.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a relevant range of task vocabulary, including “mechanical arm,” “motors,” “flexible movement,” “force sensor,” and “welding metal.” These terms help convey the subject, and the industrial examples are appropriate. Some word choices and collocations are imprecise, however: “degree of freedom” is not clearly explained, “the gripper is self” is awkward, and “the right algorithm” is vague in this context. There are also spelling errors such as “priciple,” “considred,” “equiped” and “controll.” These do not prevent the general meaning from being understood, but they reduce accuracy and polish. Prefer the diagram’s precise labels and check spelling and natural word combinations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses linked with “whereas” and “allowing,” and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with agreement, articles and verb forms. For example, “Three motors each has” should use a plural verb, while “One of the motor is” needs a plural noun after “one of.” In “make the arm raises or lowers,” the verb form after “make” is incorrect; use “make the arm rise or lower.” The sentence beginning “A computer function as the brain” also lacks a correctly formed main verb. Review subject–verb agreement and the patterns following verbs such as “make” and “allow”; these corrections would make your varied sentences clearer.
