IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram illustrate the working of mechanical arm. The computer controls the whole machine and motors. We can clearly see the efforts that are replacing by the machines. Human's lives are becoming easier because of machines and robots.
Three motors are connected in the machine. First one is attached to the shoulder of the device that can raise it's arm up and down. Second one is connected to the elbow of the device that gives the flexibility and helps in the movement. It helps the device to pick variuos things. The last one is inserted in the gripper of the machine to build-in sensors control force. It allows the machine to grip items properly and machine can sense an object after picking. It also controls the force of grip and can prevent the risk of fall.
These motors help the machine work in the same way as those in a human arm. The main advantage is that it can save alot of time and does work quickly. But making a man slow and lazy is the disadvantage of the machines.
So overall, it helps people in their work in short time and makes lives easier.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response identifies the computer, three motors, and several functions, including raising the arm and providing flexibility. However, it only partially reports the diagram and includes material that is not shown, such as claims that the machine saves time, makes people lazy, and improves people’s lives. Some key relationships are also misreported: the first motor is not described as attached to the shoulder, and the second is linked to the arm section near the wrist rather than the elbow. The pivot, base, wrist rotation, and alternative end-effectors are omitted. To improve, give a concise overview of the arm’s main components and explain their functions accurately, without adding personal opinions or unsupported benefits.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a basic paragraph structure: it introduces the diagram, describes some components, and ends with a summary. Sequencing words such as “First,” “Second,” and “last” help the reader follow the motor descriptions. However, the progression is weakened by moving from diagram details to general claims about machines, then back to the arm’s functions. The final paragraph repeats the broad idea that machines make life easier rather than drawing together the diagram’s main features. Some references, such as “It” and “the device,” are not always clear. Keep each paragraph focused on a stage or group of components, and use linking phrases to show how the computer, motors, joints, and end-effector relate.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response uses a basic range of relevant terms, including “motors,” “shoulder,” “elbow,” “gripper,” “flexibility,” and “force,” so the main subject is generally understandable. However, vocabulary is often repetitive or imprecise: “machine” and “device” recur, while phrases such as “inserted in the gripper” and “pick various things” do not describe the diagram’s functions naturally. There are also noticeable spelling and word-form errors, including “variuos,” “alot,” and “build-in.” Aim for precise technical descriptions and more varied verbs, such as “is mounted on,” “controls,” “rotates,” and “grips.” Avoid broad evaluative language that is not needed for a diagram summary.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response communicates its general meaning, and it attempts some longer sentences using clauses such as “that can raise its arm up and down” and “because of machines and robots.” However, the range is limited, and errors occur in basic sentence forms. For example, “The diagram illustrate” has subject–verb disagreement, while “the efforts that are replacing by the machines” has an incomplete passive construction. In “the last one is inserted in the gripper … to build-in sensors control force,” the sentence structure makes the relationship between the motor and sensors unclear. There are also errors with apostrophes and articles, as in “it's arm.” Use clear present-tense sentences and check agreement, passive forms, and clause construction.
