IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The given diagram demonstrates the working of a mechanical arm, which can perform human tasks like spray painting, drilling and welding. At a glance, it can be seen that 3 motors are responsible for the proper functioning of instrument.

A computer alters the electrical current to 3 different motors according to a program given by user. Firstly, a motor which is connected to a pivoted shoulder assembly is mainly responsible for raising and lowering the arm. Then, an elbow is also connected to a motor, which allows the elbow to move and gives it flexibility like that of a human's elbow. The remaining motor is joined to a wrist which permits a gripper also known as the end-effector to flex and rotate a part which it is holding. Overall, whole assembly sits on a base which remains stationary most of the time but can be occasionally moved to different place.

To sum up, mechanical arm is a very useful component which can certainly reduce human efforts and fatigue.
