The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

The diagram illustrates the design and operation of a mechanical arm that replicates the movements of a human arm through computer-controlled motors and interchangeable end-effectors.

Overall, a computer precisely controls three separate motors, which in turn regulate the movement of the arm's joints. In addition, the arm's gripper can be replaced with alternative tools depending on the task required.

Looking at the structure in more detail, the arm is attached to a base, which normally remains stationary but can occasionally be moved. A pivot at the base enables the entire arm to rotate. The shoulder motor is responsible for raising and lowering the arm, while the elbow provides flexibility by allowing further movement. The wrist, meanwhile, enables the gripper, or any alternative end-effector, to flex and rotate as needed.

At the end of the arm, the gripper contains built-in sensors that control the amount of force applied when holding an object. Instead of the standard gripper, the arm can also be fitted with other tools, such as a spray-paint gun, a drill, or a device for welding metal, allowing it to perform a wider range of industrial tasks.
