Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, reaching only 89 words. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed. The content is severely underdeveloped; it fails to describe the mechanical arm's components or the comparison to a human arm in any meaningful detail. The overview provided is irrelevant to the task, as it focuses on the social utility of the invention rather than summarizing the visual information provided in the diagram. To improve, you must describe all key features presented in the prompt and ensure the response meets the length requirement.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The response is too short to demonstrate a logical progression of ideas. While there is an attempt at paragraphing, the transition between the introduction and the body is weak. The use of cohesive devices is minimal and repetitive, such as the frequent use of 'the' and 'in'. The overall structure is fragmented, making it difficult for the reader to follow a clear line of reasoning or a systematic description of the diagram. More effort is needed to link sentences and ideas using a wider range of cohesive devices.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is very basic and repetitive. Phrases like 'separate work' and 'good invention' are simplistic and lack the precision required for an Academic Task 1 report. There is a lack of technical terminology related to the diagram, such as 'actuators', 'pivot points', or 'articulation'. The word choice is limited, and the errors in word form, such as 'motor's' (possessive instead of plural), indicate a restricted range. To achieve a higher score, you should incorporate more specific vocabulary related to the subject matter and avoid repetitive, everyday language.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the short text. Subject-verb agreement is inconsistent, such as 'The diagram illustrate' (should be 'illustrates') and 'there are three motor' (should be 'motors'). The sentence structures are simple and lack the complexity needed for a higher band. Punctuation is also problematic, particularly with the misuse of apostrophes in 'motor's'. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in such a short text significantly impacts the quality of the writing.
