IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
The diagram demonstrates the idea of controlling the machine which can be replaced by humans to do spray painting, drill holes and weld metal works.
It is noticeable that the motors act as a significant role which operated by computer for experiencing the alternative end-effectors equipment.
Firstly, it is illustrates by diagram there are three motors used to operate the machine which controlled by computer. From them, one motor fitted with base which helps for occasionally movements. With this, shoulder equipped as a lower arm and back side of that pivot situated for rotating.Another motor established with elbow. It is rendering the flexibility.
Moreover, the third motor fitted along side gripper which built in sensor control force. For support, there is large wrist at middle which allows gripper to flex or rotate at any side. This fully automated machine can work as a arm works for painting by spray, making holes by drill and last but not least welding metals.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response covers the main features of the diagram, identifying the components and their functions. However, the comparison between the mechanical arm and the human arm, which was a key part of the prompt, is only mentioned in the introduction and not developed in the body paragraphs. The description of the mechanical parts is somewhat disjointed, making it difficult for the reader to visualize the structure clearly. To improve, ensure that the comparison is integrated throughout the description rather than just mentioned at the start, and provide a more systematic overview of how the components relate to one another.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organized into paragraphs, but the flow between sentences is often mechanical and sometimes confusing. For example, the transition 'From them, one motor fitted with base' is grammatically awkward and disrupts the logical progression. While some cohesive devices like 'Moreover' and 'Firstly' are used, they are not always employed naturally. The referencing is occasionally unclear, particularly when describing the specific location of the motors. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each sentence clearly follows from the previous one would significantly enhance the coherence of the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. There are several instances of awkward word choices, such as 'experiencing the alternative end-effectors equipment' and 'fitted along side gripper'. These phrases do not accurately convey the technical nature of the diagram. While the student attempts to use subject-specific terminology like 'end-effectors' and 'pivot', the overall control is limited, and some phrasing is non-idiomatic. Expanding the range of descriptive verbs and ensuring correct collocations would help in achieving a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. There are issues with article usage ('the idea of controlling the machine', 'fitted with base'), verb forms ('it is illustrates by diagram'), and sentence structure ('the motors act as a significant role which operated by computer'). The range of structures is limited, relying mostly on simple or slightly flawed complex sentences. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar and punctuation prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct prepositional usage is essential.
