IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram illustrates that the working of a mechanical arm and its function, joints and differ types to work like a human arm.
Overall the mechanism of mechanical arm starts from computer-precision control of motors to gripper.
The computer-precision control of motors are consist of three main motors, the first motor connect with the base. On the base their is a shoulder which use to raises or lower arm . Before the shoulder a pivot which controls the rotation of arm. The second motor is fitted on a joint which allows to move flexibly .After that a wrist which helps gripper to move flex and then the third motor is fitted at the start head of gripper. At the last their is a sensor put on the head of the gripper. The computer controls the motor and the first motor to help to hold the base and the other two motor helping in flexible and rotational movements and the sensor helps to detect the signal.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to describe the mechanical arm, but it fails to clearly explain the comparison between the mechanical components and human anatomy as requested. While it identifies the motors and sensors, the description of the 'shoulder', 'pivot', and 'wrist' is somewhat disjointed and lacks the precision required for a technical summary. The overview is very brief and does not effectively highlight the main features or the functional relationship between the parts. To improve, you should focus on grouping the components logically—perhaps by their function—and explicitly stating how these mechanical parts mirror human joints, rather than just listing them sequentially.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is divided into paragraphs, which is a positive start. However, the logical flow is hindered by repetitive phrasing and a lack of sophisticated cohesive devices. Phrases like 'After that' and 'At the last' are used in a somewhat mechanical way. The referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'the first motor to help to hold the base and the other two motor helping in flexible and rotational movements', which makes the relationship between the components difficult to follow. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each sentence builds clearly on the previous one would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is quite limited and repetitive, relying heavily on basic terms like 'motor', 'move', and 'help'. There are several instances of awkward word choice and grammatical errors in word form, such as 'differ types' instead of 'different types' and 'use to raises' instead of 'is used to raise'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to describe the technical nature of the diagram with precision. To reach a higher band, you should incorporate more specific technical terminology related to mechanical engineering and improve your control over word forms and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the reader's understanding. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues ('the computer-precision control of motors are consist of'), incorrect verb forms ('which use to raises'), and missing articles or prepositions ('on the base their is a shoulder'). The sentence structures are predominantly simple or contain errors when attempting more complex constructions. There is a lack of variety in sentence patterns, and the punctuation is inconsistent. Focusing on basic sentence construction, subject-verb agreement, and the correct use of articles would be the most effective way to improve your grammatical accuracy.
