IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram illustrate the process of a robotic arm works and the function of the mechanical arm exactly work like human arm.
overall, there was total four main stage to adjust a mechanical arm. To this operate this arm we need a computer and motors also some important equipment.
At first of the Processing, to build mechanic arm firstly have to adjust some motor in elbow and gripper which was help the arm to move and catch things. Wrist allows gripper so, to handle this motors was important.
Consistently, pivot and shoulder is a crucial part of this arm they enable arm to rotate, rises and lowers. So, in that case its work like human arm. Then base usually stationary its hold the whole arm and some time it movable. Furthermore, to operate this arm like human need a command center like computer to precision control of motors. In the end this arm able alternative end effectors like spray paint, drill holes etc.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to describe the mechanical arm, but it fails to clearly identify and report the main features of the diagram. The description is fragmented and lacks a logical overview of how the components interact. While it mentions the elbow, gripper, shoulder, and base, the explanation of their functions is often unclear or inaccurate (e.g., 'At first of the Processing'). The comparison to the human arm is mentioned but not developed in a way that effectively summarizes the visual information. The response lacks the analytical precision required for an Academic Task 1 report, as it reads more like a disjointed list of parts rather than a cohesive summary of a mechanical process.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is divided into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or misused, such as 'Consistently' to start a paragraph, which does not fit the context. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the relationship between the components of the arm. The transition between the description of the parts and the mention of the command center is abrupt. While there is an attempt at an overview, the lack of clear signposting and the repetitive sentence structure hinder the flow of information throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and often repetitive. There are several instances of awkward word choices and incorrect collocations, such as 'total four main stage' instead of 'four main stages' and 'stationary its hold' instead of 'stationary, holding'. The student relies on basic terminology and struggles to express technical concepts accurately. Phrases like 'to build mechanic arm' and 'to precision control of motors' demonstrate a lack of control over word forms and grammatical accuracy in a lexical context. To improve, the student needs to focus on using more precise technical vocabulary and ensuring correct word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'The diagram illustrate'), article usage, and sentence structure. Many sentences are fragmented or lack necessary prepositions and auxiliary verbs, such as 'which was help the arm' and 'this arm able alternative end effectors'. While there is an attempt to use complex structures, these are often faulty and contain errors. The control of punctuation is also inconsistent. The student needs to focus on basic sentence construction, specifically ensuring that every sentence has a clear subject and a correctly conjugated verb.
