IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
The diagram illustrates the process of making mechanical joints similar to human arm
Overall ,it is evident that process comprise number of stage commencing with the first stage of computer precision controls and ending with final stage of usually stationary.
Turning to details, process start with computer precision controls divided into three motors.
Initially, first motor connected with elbow joints it gives movement and flexibility.second motor is attached with the other joint.third motor is joint with gripper which built in the sensors control face .Next gripper wrists allows to rotate .there after elbow attached should or raises low arm.
Probing further, pivot enables arm to rotate the base occasionally movable ,the man paint and drill the holes for screw gun . subsequently screw gun rougly fitted in the first image in second picture gun is completely fitted and procees of working like human joints are ended by welding and spray painting on it

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to describe the mechanical arm, but it fails to clearly explain the comparison between the mechanical joints and human arm joints as requested. The description of the process is fragmented and lacks a clear logical flow, making it difficult for the reader to follow the stages of the mechanical arm's operation. Key features, such as the specific functions of the motors and the relationship between the components, are under-developed or described in a confusing manner. The summary of the overall process is vague and does not effectively highlight the main features of the diagram. To improve, you should focus on clearly identifying the key stages and explaining how they relate to the human anatomy as depicted in the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay lacks a clear structure. While there is an attempt at paragraphing, the sentences within the paragraphs do not flow logically. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and often inaccurate, such as 'Turning to details, process start' and 'Probing further'. There is a lack of clear referencing; for example, it is often unclear what 'it' or 'the other joint' refers to. The progression of ideas is disjointed, which hinders the reader's ability to follow the description of the mechanical arm. More attention should be paid to using linking words appropriately and ensuring that each sentence builds logically upon the previous one.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and often imprecise. There are several instances of awkward phrasing and incorrect word choices, such as 'process comprise number of stage', 'man paint and drill', and 'screw gun rougly fitted'. Some technical terms are used, but they are not integrated into fluent sentences. The repetition of basic words and the lack of variety in descriptive language prevent the response from reaching a higher band. To improve, focus on learning collocations related to mechanical processes and ensure that you use precise terminology to describe the components shown in the diagram.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are consistent issues with article usage (e.g., 'with computer precision controls'), subject-verb agreement, and sentence structure. Many sentences are fragmented or run-on, and there is a lack of complex sentence structures. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with missing spaces after commas and periods. While the meaning can generally be inferred, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar makes the writing difficult to read. Focusing on sentence construction and proofreading for basic errors like missing articles and verb forms would significantly improve your score.
