IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
How a mechanical arm works and how the connects that make up the arm function in the same way as those in an individuals arm is depicted in the given diagram.
Overall, this process mainly consists of seven steps beginning with computer control and ending with sensors control force.
To begin with, the computer precision control of motors is connected three main motor . Firstly, motor is showed allows movements and gives flexibility of the left side then pivot enables arm to rotate . and base stationary and occasionally movable . Secondly, the motor works like wrist allows gripper or alternative end-effector to flex or rotate. Lastly, the motor is build- in sensors control force.
Alongside, the image of three different is alternative and effectors first is weld metal. second is drill holes and third is spray paint. These three equipment is used multiple purposes like drilling a hole and spray paint by the human

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarise the diagram, but it fails to clearly explain the comparison between the mechanical arm and the human arm, which was a key requirement of the prompt. The description of the mechanical arm's components is fragmented and lacks clarity. For instance, the explanation of the motors and their functions is confusing, and the connection to human anatomy is not explicitly detailed. While the main features are identified, the lack of a clear, logical overview of how the system functions as a whole limits the score. To improve, ensure that you explicitly address all parts of the prompt and provide a more cohesive explanation of the processes described in the visual data.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which is a positive step. However, the progression of ideas is often disjointed, making it difficult to follow the mechanical process. The use of cohesive devices is mechanical and sometimes inaccurate, such as the phrase 'Alongside, the image of three different is alternative'. The referencing is also unclear; for example, it is not always evident what 'this' or 'these' refers to. To improve, use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that each sentence flows logically from the previous one. Improving the transition between the description of the arm's movement and the end-effectors would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is somewhat limited and repetitive. There are several instances of awkward word choices and grammatical errors related to word forms, such as 'connects' instead of 'connections', 'is showed' instead of 'is shown', and 'is build-in' instead of 'has built-in'. The range of vocabulary is insufficient to describe the technical aspects of the diagram with precision. To improve, focus on learning technical collocations relevant to mechanical processes and ensure you use the correct word forms (nouns vs. verbs). Expanding your range of descriptive verbs and adjectives will help you convey information more accurately and professionally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'These three equipment is used'), incorrect verb forms, and missing articles. The sentence structures are mostly simple, and attempts at more complex sentences often result in errors, such as 'How a mechanical arm works and how the connects that make up the arm function... is depicted'. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with misplaced periods and missing commas. To improve, focus on mastering basic sentence construction, specifically subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Proofreading for common errors like these will help you achieve a higher level of accuracy.
