IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Below diagram describes how computer is precising and controlling the movements of motor and can be used in alternative tasks.
overall , computer is controlling the movements of three motors , one motor is fitted in the base while second is kept under the elbows of machine, although third motor is in grip which is enforced by sensor .
The base of ocassionally moveable arm consist of motor which raises the lower arm for movement by pivot which enables the arm to rotate, computer is precising alternative motor in elbow which provides flexibility to wrist , another motor is controlled by computer which is under the gripper of arm which enable sensors to control the force.
many use of arms are spray paint, drill, weld metals.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The response provides an overview of the mechanical arm and its functionalities, but it lacks complete detail and clarity. Key aspects such as specific features of the mechanical arm in relation to the human arm could be more clearly described. For instance, while the response mentions motors and their functions, it does not adequately summarize the primary function of each motor nor sufficiently compare it to the human arm. Overall, the task achievement is limited as it does not fully cover the complexity of the diagram’s information. Score: 5
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
Coherence and cohesion are present but could be significantly improved. The ideas are somewhat linked, but the structure lacks clarity, making it hard for the reader to follow. Sentences often jump between different points without effective transitions. For example, "The base of occasionally moveable arm consist of motor..." could better connect to the discussion of the motor under the elbows for smoother reading. More logical paragraphing or clear linking phrases would greatly enhance the flow of the information presented. Score: 5
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary used in the response is somewhat limited, with phrases like "computer is precising" being unclear and awkwardly constructed. There are instances of repetition, such as using 'motor' several times without variation. Some terms like "occasional" and "enforced by sensor" are imprecise or incorrectly used. Stronger word choices and technical language relevant to robotics could improve the lexical range and precision of the response. Score: 5
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
Grammatical accuracy is a significant issue in this response. There are multiple grammar mistakes, such as subject-verb agreement errors (e.g., "consist of motor" should be "consists of motors") and sentence fragment issues, which affect communication. Additionally, awkward phrasing and incorrect verb forms diminish the overall quality. For example, "computer is precising alternative motor" is grammatically incorrect and confusing. Improved grammatical control is needed for higher scores. Score: 5
Overall feedback
The response outlines the basic workings of a mechanical arm, which is a positive aspect. However, to enhance your score, focus on clearly addressing all elements presented in the diagram and comparing them effectively with human joints. Work on organizing your response more logically, perhaps by using clear paragraphs to separate different functions or aspects of the arm. Additionally, enhancing your vocabulary range and improving grammatical accuracy will be crucial for a higher score. Consider practicing writing to specific structures and proofreading your work for clarity and grammatical correctness.
