IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The diagram illustrates the main components of an industrial robot and explains how its different parts are controlled and used.
Overall, the robot is operated by a computer that precisely controls several motors. It consists of a stationary or movable base, a shoulder, an arm with an elbow and wrist, and a gripper. The gripper can also be replaced by other tools for specific industrial tasks.
At the bottom of the robot is the base, which is normally stationary, although it can occasionally be moved. Above this is the shoulder, which is responsible for raising and lowering the arm. A pivot allows the entire arm to rotate, while the elbow provides flexibility and movement. Further along the arm, the wrist enables the gripper or another end-effector to flex and rotate.
The robot is controlled by a computer connected to three motors, which regulate its movements. The gripper contains built-in sensors that control the amount of force applied to objects. Alternatively, it can be fitted with different end-effectors, such as a spray-painting tool, a drill for making holes, or equipment for welding metal.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response effectively covers the main features of the mechanical arm. You have clearly identified the key components, such as the base, shoulder, elbow, wrist, and gripper, and explained their functions. The comparison to the human arm is acknowledged, and the mention of the computer control system and interchangeable end-effectors adds necessary detail. The information is accurate and well-selected, providing a clear overview of the diagram. To reach a higher band, you could more explicitly highlight the functional parallels between the mechanical joints and human anatomy, as requested in the prompt, rather than just listing the parts.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the robot—the overview, the physical structure, and the control/functional capabilities. Cohesive devices such as 'At the bottom of the robot', 'Above this', and 'Further along the arm' are used effectively to guide the reader through the physical layout. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct themes. The flow is smooth, and the relationship between the computer control and the mechanical movements is clearly established, making the text easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for a technical description. Terms like 'stationary', 'end-effector', 'regulate', and 'flexibility' are used accurately. The vocabulary is precise enough to convey the mechanical nature of the subject matter without being overly repetitive. While the range is sufficient, incorporating a few more sophisticated collocations or technical synonyms could elevate the response further. The spelling is accurate throughout, and the word choices are consistently appropriate for the context of an academic report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The writing displays a good variety of sentence structures, including complex sentences that combine information effectively, such as 'The gripper can also be replaced by other tools for specific industrial tasks.' Grammar is generally accurate, with correct use of passive voice and relative clauses. There are no significant errors that impede communication. The control over punctuation and sentence boundaries is strong, and the majority of sentences are error-free. To achieve a higher score, you could experiment with more varied subordinating conjunctions or participle phrases to increase the complexity of your sentence construction.
