IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The picture illustrates the working of a mechanical arm, and resemblence of joints that form the arm with a human arm in their function.

Overall, a computer works with the help of motors which are needed to perform different functions such as for a shoulder, eblow and a gripper. All of these along with a pivot and wrist are required for a machine's proper working.

Firstly, there is a base which is mostly static but on sometimes can be moveable, it carries the whole arm. Then a motor runs a shoulder which enables the arm to go up and down, while there is also a pivot which enables the arm to rotate same as glenohumeral joint in human. Next, another motor is connected to elbow that allows movement and gives flexibility.

After this, a wrist comes which is present between elbow and gripper same as a wrist in human between elbow and hand. It permits gripper to do flexion or rotation in doing tasks such as spraying paint, drilling holes and welding metal. It also has a connection with the motor.
