IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The diagram illustrates how a mechanical arm works, and its similarities with a human arm.

Overall, the mechanical arm is comanded by a computer; it has three motors, and it is similar to a human arm, it presents an elbow, gripper, wrist, pivot, shoulder and base. The main function for this is an alternative end-effectored tools, such as spray paint, drill holes and weld metal.

One of the main features of the mechanical arm is that it has three motors that are controlled by a central computer. The first motor controls the shoulder, where it raises and lowers the arm of the machine, while the second motor is responsible for the elbow, which allow the machanic arm to have flexibility. The third motor is available for the sensors control force.

Additionally, the machine also have a pivot and wrist without motors, which allow it to have movements and rotation. The mechanical arm is an alternative to do jobs such as spray paint, drill holes and weld metal effortless.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers the main features of the mechanical arm, including its components and functions. However, the comparison to the human arm is mentioned but not sufficiently developed or integrated into the description of the mechanical parts. While the prompt asks for a summary of how the arm works and its similarities to a human arm, the explanation of the motor functions is somewhat simplistic. The inclusion of specific tasks like 'spray paint' and 'drill holes' is relevant, but the overall analysis lacks the depth required for a higher band. The summary of the main features is present, but the connection between the mechanical joints and human anatomy remains superficial.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is organised into logical paragraphs, with an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'One of the main features', and 'Additionally' are used to guide the reader. However, the flow within paragraphs is occasionally mechanical. For instance, the transition between the description of the motors and the pivot/wrist could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, but the structure of the sentences within the paragraphs sometimes feels repetitive, which slightly affects the overall progression of ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the general overview from the specific technical details.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, with technical terms like 'end-effectored', 'sensors', and 'pivot' used correctly. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and minor errors, such as 'comanded' (spelling), 'machanic arm' (spelling), and 'effortless' (used as an adverb where 'effortlessly' is required). The phrase 'alternative end-effectored tools' is slightly confusing and lacks precision. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited, and the errors in word formation and spelling prevent the response from reaching a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the machine also have', 'which allow the machanic arm'), and punctuation errors, such as the comma splice in the first paragraph ('...human arm, it presents...'). While the meaning is generally clear, these frequent errors in basic grammar and sentence construction are noticeable. The use of complex structures is limited, and the accuracy of these structures is inconsistent. Improving control over verb forms and sentence boundaries would significantly enhance the quality of the writing.
