IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The diagram below shows how a mechanical arm works, and how the joints that make up the arm function in the same way as those in a human arm. Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The diagram illustrates the structure and functions of an industrial robotic arm, which is operated by a computer to perform various tasks with high precision.
Overall, the robotic arm consists of a stationary base, several motors, movable joints, a wrist and a gripper. Different end-effectors can also be attached to the arm, allowing it to perform specialized industrial activities.
The base supports the entire mechanism and can occasionally be moved. Above it, a shoulder joint raises or lowers the arm, while a pivot enables the arm to rotate. The elbow provides flexibility and allows further movement. Three motors, controlled precisely by a computer, power these movements. At the end of the arm, the wrist permits the gripper or another end-effector to rotate. The gripper contains built-in sensors that control the applied force, enabling it to handle objects safely. Alternatively, the gripper can be replaced with tools designed for spray painting, drilling holes or welding metal.
